Leave it to Rob to pull Garrett's pants down by doing something ridiculous just to show Redpube couldn't adjust to it.

Yet all it took was moving Dez to the slot and, voila, a catch.

Another comment to add to the book of "Enigmatic Football by the Dallas Cowboys":

Finally we get a rushing attack that averages 5.6 yards per carry...thus, it should enable effective play-action passing.

...but the day we get an effective rushing attack, we can't play-action because we're fucking down by 30 points.

Eh. Rob Ryan did this because he knew he could.

Bryant struggles against press. It is just that simple. Guys like DeAngelo Hall can frustrate the shit out of him. This was just an escalation of that strategy.

Jerry Jones on Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant: ‘We need to get him the ball more’
By Jon Machota

Jerry Jones sees the bye week as a good opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys offense to get back on track. After struggling in New Orleans on Sunday, Jones talked Tuesday about the need for better production on third down.

The Cowboys were 0-of-9 on third down in their 49-17 loss to the Saints.

“When I look ahead at our team, our opponents, I think we have the potential to be a really productive offensive team,” the Cowboys owner and general manager said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “It’s in the can. In other words, we’ve for years been working in this system. We did several things in the offseason, regarding our blocking scheme that should make us a better offensive team. And all of that is very, in my mind, likely that we’ll have a great two week period off here.

“We’ll use our bye right and come out and be sharper offensively. As we go forward, that and the addition of the players that we can play with on defense that we haven’t been playing with, I think that looks for better day ahead. I do.”

Perhaps the most glaring adjustment on offense is giving Dez Bryant, the team’s best playmaker, more opportunities to make plays. Bryant was only targeted twice Sunday. Jones said he’d like to see his star wide receiver getting more touches.

“We need to get him the ball more,” Jones said. “I think that’s the kind of thing that is a reasonable thing that you can adjust over a two-week period that we’re going into with our bye. How do we work to get him the ball more?

Jones also said the team needed to find ways to get running back Lance Dunbar the ball more.

“He’s a playmaker out there,” Jones said. “We need to really be able to look at what we’re doing in some of the play-action area. Are we having trouble blocking them up? If so, then let’s loosen them up a little bit more.”

Here’s how Bryant’s targets compare to some of the other top receivers in the league:

Detroit’s Calvin Johnson: 12

Cincinnati’s A.J. Green: 11.9

Houston’s Andre Johnson: 10.6

Chicago’s Brandon Marshall: 10.3

Bryant: 9

Denver’s Demaryius Thomas: 8.8

Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald: 7.8

Five straight passes to open up against the Giants. 1 catch on a bubble screen for 3 yards, one drop, 2 incompletions and a pick six.

Book it.

This is why statistics out of context don't mean much.

Bryant finishes with 8-79 yards. But if all eight of them come in the second half after the defense has loosened up and has a nice lead, who gives a shit.

Garrett not satisfied with Bryant's two targets against Saints, says lack of snaps part of the problem

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Dez Bryant was not targeted enough against the Saints and that getting him the ball is part of the plan from here.

“The other night, we were not,” he said, asked if he was satisfied with the number of targets Bryant is getting. “I think he got two. Typically, he’s gotten many more than that, and I think his production speaks for itself that way. But he’s one of those players you want to make sure you give him chances.”

Bryant was targeted only twice in the 49-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday night, less than everyone except Dwayne Harris. Six times this year, Bryant has been the Cowboys’ leader or co-leader in targets. In four games, he has had double-digit targets. In those six games, the Cowboys are 4-2.

“Dez is, I think, targeted as much as anybody on our team,” Garrett said. “I know he and Witt are the ones who are typically targeted as much as anybody, and for obvious reasons. He’s a play-making type player for us and has been, so you want to make sure you give him chances, and we have to make sure we do that week in and week out. And one of the issues in the game the other night is we just didn’t have as many snaps as we typically do. They had over 80 and we had just north of 40, so that limits your opportunities. Having said that, he’s one of those players you need to try in every way you can to get the ball in his hands and we’ll continue to try to do that.”

Asked whether it’s important to communicate to Romo to get Bryant the ball, Garrett said, “Absolutely. Yeah, you simply have to find ways to get him the ball. We have got to do that, and we’ll do a better job of that going forward.”

Nothing to see here. We just didn't have as many offensive snaps, or some such shit.

In a primitive way, this makes sense.

I firmly believe Garrett (Callahan whatever) scripts the plays early in a game. And usually this does not involve Bryant.

There have been too many games where he does not even get targeted, let alone a touch, until late. Or vice versa, which you saw with KC.

I realize Ryan coached his ass off, but if there is the idea to feature your best players not allow the defense to dictate the motions, we might be better off.

It is just sometimes it looks like we are guessing and if things don't work, there is panic.

I think they go in with one gameplan in mind, and have absolutely zero ability to adjust to what is being thrown at them.

I'm sick of Garrett. Plain and simple. I'm beyond exhausted of his bullshit rhetoric. Granted, that happens just about any time a coach's team starts regularly embarrassing themselves but he's gotten to the point where just reading what he says irritates the hell out of me.

It would be different if he was winning. I have no illusions about that. I would still find him to be the stiff, boring, android that he is, but I wouldn't be cussing him under my breath like I have been lately.

Yeah, I think most of the criticism stems from just this. He's not winning.

All that other nonsense about "bad playcalling" or "outcoached every week" or whatever, is all fan frustration, translatable to "he's not winning." Which is true.

People bitched about Parcells too, and he was the best coach this team has had since Jimmy Johnson.

But I've heard every analysis under the sun for why Garrett sucks:

He won't shorten the passing game, he won't lengthen the passing game, he won't run the ball, he runs the ball at the wrong time, he mismanages the clock, he doesn't value the offensive line, he doesn't make them practice, he won't bench players, when he benches players it's worthless mind games, he doesn't know enough about defense, he's not a good situational playcaller, he doesn't know how to delegate, he's not hands on enough as a walk around coach, he gets too cute, he's not creative enough. Geez, how did this guy get a job offer from the Ravens if he can't do any of these things? Simple answer.... he can.... they get blown out of proportion.

A lot of those theories contradict each other.

No, the bitching about his poor coaching is legit. The bitching about his horrific scheme design is legit. It is just compounded by the fact that we are losing.

It's a logical fallacy.

In other words, if we weren't losing, no one would be bitching about all those things he does that cause us to lose.

Of course. Because if we were winning it would mean he stopped doing things that cause us to lose.
