How concerning is Dez Bryant's back?
November, 7, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant did not practice on Wednesday. His back was tight.

In the locker room after practice, Bryant said there was no doubt that he would play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The rest of the organization has that feeling, too. The day off was just a precaution.

But what about the future?

Bryant turned 25 on Monday. A 25-year-old with back issues does not portend well for a 28-, 29- or 30-year-old.

The Cowboys do not believe there is a structural issue with Bryant’s back, but it is something that has acted up a few times. The most severe case came in the 2012 season finale at Washington. Bryant could not finish the game and needed a wheelchair to the bus out of FedEx Field. It bugged him some in training camp and earlier in the season.

Bryant is signed through 2014. The Cowboys have shown a willingness to sign their core players to extensions as they enter the final year of their contracts. They did it with Sean Lee in August. They did it with Tony Romo in the offseason.

Bryant looks ready to cash in on a megamillions deal just like Lee and Romo did. Lee had yet to play a full season because of injuries to his hamstring, thumb and foot, but the Cowboys invested in him. Romo, who is eight years older than Bryant, was having back issues when he signed his six-year extension worth $108 million. He would have a cyst removed from his back not long thereafter and miss the entire offseason.

Should Bryant’s back give them pause?

The Cowboys have to determine what causes the tightness in Bryant’s back and figure out a way to keep him loose. He is too valuable to miss time, be it a practice or a game. He is too young to have back problems.

Ultimately, does this prevent the Cowboys from keeping Bryant in their long-term plans? Not really, but it has to be a little concerning.

Funny what a few weeks can do. At the start of the season a lot of folks wanted Beasley dropped at the nearest dumpster.
I was one of those for sure. The kid gets open for short gains and is like having a good short yardage back in the open field. The man is a role-player and will never be more than that, but Beasley's making the roster is way down on my list of disappointments this season.

Frankly I think Murray, Dunbar, Harris, Austin, Witten, and even Escobar should be getting those catches. Beasley benefits from being underestimated in the open field where other far more dangerous receiving options divert the defense's attention.

He's a nonfactor in the redzone and has no chance of becoming a long-time starting WR. In 15 receptions the kid has one catch over 20 yards. Both Harris and Escobar each have longer plays (Escobar has two) with a combined 3 fewer receptions. His 9.7 YPC ranks 120th among NFL receiving targets-- basically he's a less productive Julian Edelman.

Woo hoo.

Basically he's a role player who cranks out first downs for us and can seemingly get open at will. Our corners have been quoted as saying if you want to get in good work go against Beasley because they can't stop him.

Quit trying to downplay it because you took a strong position against him earlier I guess.

Sources: Cowboys WR Bryant may have disc problem in back
MIKE FISHER |
Published: Thursday, November 07, 2013, 3:50pm

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant participated on a limited basis in practice on Thursday while continuing to vow to play Sunday night in New Orleans. But sources close to the Cowboys standout tell FOX Sports Southwest that there are concerns he is suffering from a bulging or herniated disc in his back and that measures being taken to treat the ailment go far beyond "precautionary."

"C'mon, you know I'm going to play,'' Bryant said in the locker room while declining to address the specifics of his condition.

Bryant missed the Wednesday practice and FOX Sports Southwest is told he instead consulted with doctors regarding the problem. On Thursday he was initially scheduled to sit out the workout. But instead, he moved gingerly through the "pat-and-go'' (jog-through) start of the session. And when the rest of the offense readied for full-speed work, Bryant removed his helmet, walked to the sideline and reclined on the ground under the supervision of a trainer.

"It's bothering him a little bit off and on," head coach Jason Garrett said. "We don't think it's a significant deal."

Bryant, 25, and having a Pro Bowl-caliber season, has fought through back issues before. A year ago after a Week 16 loss at Washington, he required the use of a wheelchair to exit the locker room. This season, he's missed a handful of snaps amid reports of "tightness" and "back spasms." He's certain to want to fight through this as well. But this is not just "tightness" or "back spasms."

There are concerns that this is indeed "a significant deal."

The terms "herniated" and "bulging" are often used interchangeably. They are different, but the problems and treatments are similar: Traction, electrical stim, heat and rest.

Right now, "rest" doesn't seem to be Bryant's top priority.

He's playing for a new deal (if reports are true and he wants one next season) so no way he's sitting out. We better be on top of this as to whether it's a chronic thing though.

I thought shrimp Beasley was too small to play. He's starting to change my mind. He has a role.

I certainly wouldn't suggest "giving his catches" to somebody else. About the only other player on the roster I'd prefer to try that role is Harris. Screw that Escobar nonsense.

f the little shit gets open, throw it to him for nine yards a pop. So what he can't get deep or be a red zone guy.

He's more consistently productive in the true slot role than anyone else we have had recently.

Hatcher, Hayden return to practice
November, 8, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys starting defensive tackles Jason Hatcher (stinger) and Nick Hayden (ribs) returned to practice Friday after missing the last few days.

Despite Hatcher's return, the team still has concerns. Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said on KRLD-FM that if the game were today Hatcher wouldn't play, and that his availability for Sunday should be a game-time decision.

Hatcher expressed concern about whether he could play because he's never had a stinger before. He will use a special neck brace to protect the area in case he plays Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Elsewhere during Friday's open practice session, Dez Bryant made a leaping catch on a pass thrown behind him, arching his back to make the play.

Bryant was limited in practice Thursday with a sore back. Jones said there are no disk issues with the receiver.

Wide receiver Miles Austin (hamstring), cornerback Morris Claiborne (hamstring), linebacker DeVonte Holloman (neck) and safety J.J. Wilcox (knee) missed practice.

All reports are saying Dez looked pretty good in practice today. No movement limitations.

I don't know why Jones doesn't add fucking M.D. to his President/Owner/GM title block.
