Alex Smith playing doesn't guarantee anything, you guys realize that he's an average at absolute best QB?

And that may be generous, he's measurably worse than Andy Dalton.

The last game he played he was 8/19 for 57 yards, 0 TD's and 1 INT in a full half of football. On the season he's averaging a pedestrian 6.5 YPA with 4 TD's and 6 INT's over about 6 games.

If he didn't play their chances of losing would be like 90%, with him it's a toss-up, maybe a slight Skins lean. This isn't some elite QB coming back who guarantees a win, it's a moderately competent QB coming back to avoid a guaranteed loss.

The comparison is Heinicke, not Dalton, and even a hobbled Smith should win that one every time. No guarantees, but they stand a better chance with a veteran under center.

I read what I wanna read. ;) So we both agree that Smith (albeit hindered) gives them a better chance to win. Yippee.
Yea of course, the other guy isn't an NFL QB, Smith is still very average though.

You'll have two shit teams playing each other, anything can happen if the Eagles have any hint of motivation, same goes for our game.

Either way, pending what happens Sunday I think there's a pretty solid argument that we're the best team in the division right now even with all of our missing pieces. I think if we played the Skins Sunday for the division we'd win, we kind of got unlucky with the timing of those games against them because the first game was the first full game without Martin and I believe McGovern's first start, and the second game we lost Martin and Erving in the 1st quarter.

Going against their DL with our OL in the state that it is in was always going to be tough but we got them at the absolute worst time. With the way our defense is playing, and the OL looking like they have some concept of how to play together, I think we'd be solid favorites against them at this point in time.

It's not saying much given that this is perhaps the worst division in NFL history but it does bode well moving forward once we get some of our guys back.

This will all be academic if we lose to NY, and even if we don't, I'm not sure how motivated Philly will be to get us into the playoffs (Smith or no Smith). I don't think any NFCE team wins a playoff game this year, home game or not.

I mean, Hurts* and some of their other guys may very well be playing for their careers. It's not like they are going to lay down to avoid helping Dallas.

* In other words, Philly could easily turn right back to Wentz in the off-season if Hurts doesn't play well this week. This could be Hurts' best chance at being a starter he ever gets in his career. I'm not sure he'd believe that right now but regardless I'd guess he at least understands the starter job isn't guaranteed and that this game is extremely important for him. Several of their other players will be in similar positions. And hell, Pederson and Schwartz could be coaching for their jobs this week. The eagles might simply be not good enough but I doubt motivation will be an issue, and I'm certain the players and coaches don't give much of a rats' ass whether Dallas or Washington wins the division. They have their own problems.

Yea, I mean ultimately if we beat the Giants and the Skins win and we don't make the playoffs it doesn't change my opinion much going into next year. Given the state of the team "making the playoffs" is more a psychological thing for fans I think, maybe some players, but at the end of the day I don't think playing one more week and losing by 20 to Tampa is going to change anything one way or the other.

Winning 4 in a row to end the year and have a chance at going to the playoffs carries the same value in my opinion whether the Skins win or lose. It might even be more valuable for them to win and make it even more difficult for them to actually find a long-term answer at QB.
