I think Stephen will be better than Jerry. However, unless he takes a hands off approach and differs to a qualified GM when it comes to player acquisitions, I think we're in for another 25+ years without a Super Bowl appearance.

I do think he'll be more tolerable though. He's not near the sunshine pumping, attention whore that his father is. And I doubt he's doing a weekly radio show and holding his own postgame press conference like Jerry.

As others have mentioned, one of the biggest issues I have with him is that he rarely makes an attempt to sign top-level free agents. Instead pretty much all of our larger contracts are tied up in players who the Cowboys drafted, and in many cases overvalued. Amari Cooper is the slight exception but only because they traded for him.

I wish there were some middle ground between Stephen's cheapness and Jerry's reckless wildcatter mentality.

I’ll take what I don’t really know at this point versus what I am certain of.

It may not lead to better results, but that’s where desperation will leave you. Whether he has the stubbornness of his father to continue to try and fail a thousands times over is what will be most interesting to see.
Same here. It's pretty much the mentality most of us had regarding Jason Garrett.

You could have just said the shinier of two turds.
No offense but this is why the English language continues to suffer. Since my kids were young I never dumbed down my language for them. yet, they don't know what the word wont means.

Jerry sucks but one thing I’ve always wondered was how long does it take to become a football man. You play in college at the highest level and then own a team for 30 years and you’re still not a football man? Maybe it applies in this situation but it always seemed like a bad way to put it.

I imagine Jerry has picked up a lot of football knowledge over the years, his problem is he has favorites and he gets blinded to their faults so they get to stick around and start because of that

The real question is how much can one man really have on his plate? Being a legitimate NFL GM isn’t the sort of thing that allows you to competently chase other endeavors. Which is what Jerry has done. Hell, look at all the hats Belichick wears. The greatest coach in league history, and even he has a very spotty drafting resume.

Now put yourself in Jerry’s shoes, with all that he does and is involved with, football or otherwise. It takes a real football guy to do that job. He isn’t it. Anyone with the intelligence, commitment, and resources could probably turn themselves into a real GM after that long, if that’s all they did. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Jerral.

"Football man" may be the wrong way to put it, it's really just a euphemism for a good team builder.

Like, Isaiah Thomas and Phil Jackson were clearly "basketball men" but they were terrible team builders. Just because someone is a great player or coach or have been around a sport most of their lives doesn't mean they're good at evaluating talent and building teams.

Jerry is clearly horrendous, on a personal level, at evaluating talent and building teams in the NFL, and I'm guessing Stephen would be about the same if he didn't have the self awareness to understand that he has to let guys like McClay and the scouts make personnel decisions.

Yeah some people just aren't cut out for certain jobs. Some people could study math every day of their life and still never be good at math. Jerry has been around football a long time. He has worked with really great team builders like Parcells and Jimmy. But Jerry just doesn't have the ability to ever become a good GM. Just not in him.

As an aside, seeing the title, I thought this thread was about picking up John Stephen

There is more to running a successful NFL team than just knowing Xs and Os. Jerry has none of the nuance needed. He holds onto players too long. He overpays players. He is way too much of an optimist to ever successfully run a team. He has proven that over and over.

Everything you say is true but it isn’t going to change as long as. He is alive. Complaining about it will only serve to raise ones frustration. Probably the worst thing that ever happened to this organization was the Hershel Walker trade. It allowed Dallas to garner a treasure cove to win 3 Super Bowls in his early acquition. Because of that he has never learned to build a team as GM. He thinks it can be done with the same approach as before and hasn’t realized that the job requirements necessitate different styling.

Shut it down, boys! No reason to have a message board since there is no need for messages anymore.
