There was a little over three minutes left and we had a bit of momentum. Pinning them deep is a better option then setting them up at midfield, where it only takes one pass to put them in FG position. It was a desperate move, but we weren't technically desperate yet.
Correct.

And I don't trust the defense either of course. But, cleveland in the 4th quarter prior to that possession had 2 drives, totalling 8 plays and 15 yards.

It just made much more sense to kick it deep.

That squib kick was fucking atrocious. I still don't understand the line of thinking there. You should have wanted to pin them as deep as you can there and pray to all that his holy the defense can get a stop giving you a shorter field to work with to at least get the FG. Just baffled my mind.
That squib kick reminded me of Lincoln Riley's decision to squib kick to UGA in the 2017 CFB Playoff game.

Oklahoma had all the momentum and had a 31-14 lead with about :20 seconds on the clock. UGA's offense was off track and their ST hadn't come close to breaking a long return all day. So Lincoln Riley, in all his genius, decides to squib kick and of course it's executed poorly, similar to yesterday. 2 or 3 plays later UGA is kicking a FG to gain a little momentum and make it a 2 possession game at halftime.

Supposedly smart coaches outsmarting themselves will never not be a thing in football.

I agree, pin them back and make the Browns think twice. We may still have lost but that was getting too cute. May have been the Browns still run for a first down but I don't lile the kick in that situation.

Still no idea why you grab the face mask there. If you're beat I see facemasks happen out of desperation. But this is jist fucking pathetic. You're late to the play and you grab his facemask for no reason. Go for the ball, do something, but I have no idea what goes through Jaylons head anymore.
If it weren't for his dead cap number being over $20M I'd say they should go ahead and release him immediately, but it looks like we're stuck with him until 2022. His dead cap number drops to $6.8M then. Much easier to swallow.

I would at least bench him. See what Bernard can do. See if that lights a fire under him.

Absolutely. Just read the game and how things were playing out. Cleveland had clearly gotten tight and was feeling the pressure of the moment. That Cleveland franchise is just as mentally battered and weak as the Cowboys. You saw it in their eyes.....they were thinking "here we go again."

So there's a good chance that nerves and lack of confidence get to them if they're backed up to their own 25.

I'd bench him to maybe try to at least motivate him. Make him hungry again. Otherwise fuck it and cut him. Eat the sunk cost.

I'll be disappointed if he's in the starting lineup next week. I refuse to believe Bernard can't at least match what we've seen from Jaylon. In fact I'm fairly confident he'll make a few more plays.

And of course, sentimental Jerry pays him after one decent year.

I made this point recently that the the outcome of a game can be managed even if a team is short on the offense. This game is a perfect example.
Perfect example.

49 points is "short on the offense."

All you have to do is get 300 rushing yards, WR-throw-TD and WR-end-around-TD.

Rinse & repeat.

Also, maybe it would serve to send a message. Could end up being worth it in the long term

They had an enormous amount of momentum at that point, were down 3 and had plenty of time.

Just kick it deep and pin them back as much as possible.

Even if they were trying to squib it, there's no need for it.
Oh, I agree... just saying it wasn't an os attempt.

We can cut Jaylon after this year and save $400K against the cap, I think that works for me, especially when you consider how much it opens up in 2022 and 2023.
Yeah the bonus is a sunk cost. If he isn't worth starting save the base salary as cap space.

What are you replacing him with? We won't have enough draft picks to shore up every position and saving $400k isn't exactly gonna get us a stud FA replacement.

You remember when I said I'd have been fine with Kenneth Murray or Patrick Queen at 17 (obviously assuming Lamb would've been long gone)?

This is why.

I think I could argue that off-ball LB is our biggest need on defense, although basically everything else except CB is there right along with it.
