I was surprised to hear those comments on Steele, and questioned them at the end of the game when he got focused on and struggled.
He's a rookie, though, and a free agent one at that. He barely even knows where to line up right now.

Same with Diggs although he's obviously a lot better player.

Don't get me wrong, Steele did better overall than I was expecting. I half expected to see another Alex Barron night. That said, there's clearly some more work to be done.

Baker Mayfield sucked yesterday. That is one positive that we can take away from yesterdays football games.

Diggs looked active, and better than most of our recent corners, but even he was just a tick late on two or three key plays. One being that perfect pass from Goff to the rookie (Jefferson I think?)
Diggs made a good play on that, it was just a great pass and catch. I can’t fault him on that

Schultz ... vindicated?

No doubt the Rams played it well. That doesn't mean Schultz was where he should be.

And honestly, even though Orlovsky says it wasn't any of the Cowboys' fault, he then specifically states in the video that Lamb should have gotten deeper on the route and Dak could have made it work with a better throw. So...

as I watched, I was of the opinion that Lamb should have been able to get the needed yardage.

It's not time to panic. The biggest issues are the injuries, which seemed to happen to positions where we can least afford it (LB, OT, TE).

Otherwise, we played a decent team, played poorly in general, and yet had plenty of chances to win. Nothing happened that can't be fixed.

Dak looked good.
Zeke looked good.
Aldon Smith looked good.
The secondary mostly held up.

The most disappointing aspects of the game were probably the offensive and defensive lines, and the WRs. These are probably the areas most of us had the most confidence in. We'll likely be fine long term in those areas.

There isn't much that I looked at last night and thought, oh shit what are we going to do? Even TE, probably our biggest hole, isn't likely to cripple us as long as we bring in a guy that can correctly run his assignments and block.

We knew a new regime with no off-season was going to be a work in progress. It's not time to panic.
Agreed.

The only thing that really annoyed me was the decision to not kick the FG on 4th and 3 in the 4th quarter. It was another example of a coach overthinking the situation.

I truly believe there's genius in simplicity. Belichick understands this concept. If more coaches would embrace the principle of Occam's razor they'd probably shave 2 or 3 losses off their record each season.

I highly doubt we are bringing in a body at DT or on the DL, where we have too many names to begin with. Poe is the big fat fuck - where was he?

The push that the Rams got on us was highly, highly concerning. Every handoff was an easy 4 yards and then some.

I'm "hoping" (is hoping the right word, that I want this to be a scenario that is simply a repeat of us getting trounced in the divisional round in 2018?) that this is the Rams getting back to their 2018 levels and that against most teams we will be much better up front.
I expected a helluva lot more out of this “new and improved” DL and to say it was disappointing is an understatement.
Plus, no wrinkles in the D coverages and little to no pass rush.
Outside of that, no adjustments that I could see were made to slow down the running game and the dump off passes.
All in all a total shitfest on the D side.

I dunno, I kinda feel the opposite.

The OL and DL looked overmatched. What are you gonna do about that? Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esche looked bad. What are we gonna do about that?

I'm very concerned.
The OL had an UDFA (Steele) starting at RT.....La'el Collins will fix that issue in a few weeks. Also, Connor Williams did alright, IMO. He was matched up most of the night against arguably the best DL since Reggie White. So no shame in being whipped occasionally by an all-time great who's in his prime. We won't run into another DL of that caliber all year.

I do agree that LB is a concern. Jaylon looks like an overrated turd out there. There are too many instances of him taking poor angles, taking missteps that take him out of position, and struggling in coverage. That was a terrible contract. LVE and Lee can't be trusted to stay healthy. I'm just crossing my fingers hoping that Bernard turns into a hidden gem.

Overall they did a solid job against the run. The Rams only averaged 3.8 yards per carry. The problem was it seemed like it took them 3 or 4 series to finally get a grasp on the Rams blocking schemes and misdirection plays. Coaching adjustments have got to come a lot quicker than what we saw last night.

The stats lie. 3.8 a run, okay. But you see when they ran inside the tackle box with their shitty interior...bad.

Interior run defense in short yardage situations was a struggle but I still maintain that overall the run defense wasn't a complete trainwreck.

They have shown Garrett more than Joe Judge so far.

Garrett going for it on 4th and 1 and tries to draw them offsides.

Oh that tricky tricky Garrett.
