Exactly why I made sure to mention 'rookie'.

And then you cross your fingers and hope that the guy can become as good as Cooper has already proven to be? Yeah, no thanks dumbasses!

Childish response.

Well might as well have every defensive position on the need list going into the draft.

No worries, Gregory is back anyway. Right?

I look at it this way. They already invested a 1st rounder (2019) in Cooper. If they let him walk, you're going to use your 2019 and 2020 1st round picks to end up with ONE ROOKIE RECEIVER?

That's about the worst misuse of resources I have ever heard of.
Even if it's a great class for receivers and you know I think it is. I'm with you, I'd hate to invest another first round pick in a WR just to save 19 mil a year right now. I mean you have to spend that money somewhere. And guys like Cooper are rarely available at 25 years old in free agency. So if you don't pay Cooper you have to find me another free agent who is elite at his position to fill a different hole. Guys like Chris Jones aren't hitting free agency at DT. So while I like some of these free agent DTs, they aren't of the caliber of impact player as Cooper.

I'd still take a WR though if it falls right in the third round and later. I'm not sure we can afford to pay Gallup big dollars 2 years from now. Better to start developing a guy sooner rather than later.

What it really comes down to for me is, do you pay Cooper or do you pay Byron. Whichever guy/position you don't pay becomes a massive need. To me Cooper had a way bigger impact on winning or losing games. So the smart move is to let Jones walk and fix corner with a free agent and a draft pick.

That has always been my position on things.

So, we should get a 3rd for him and Byron? Sucks that we lost Quinn, but that is going to be nice.
It just depends on what we do the remainder of free agency. So far, we have lost Jones, Cobb and Quinn to decent contracts.

I would imagine Jones could fetch as high as a second/third, Quinn a third and Cobb a late rounder.

This will be the motivation when we go dumpster diving the rest of free agency.

I would endorse this. Hell sign Linval Joseph too.

I just hope we have some sort of plan defensively to at least recoup the losses at end and corner. Edge rushers in particular are horrid in this upcoming draft.

But knowing Goof Son, we probably are just counting those comp picks and the triumphant return of Randy Gregory.

Sucks losing Quinn but I wouldn't have given him that deal, so I can't blame the FO. There are plenty of options out there, it's just a matter of whether or not they're aggressive enough to pursue them.

I don't think we necessarily need to add another premium edge-rusher though. I'd be fine if we were to bring in a handful of interior rusher types and kind of run a jumbo base package with Lawrence and 3 DT types, something like Lawrence-Collins-Pierce-Wolfe, and then draft a DE/OLB hybrid type who comes in on nickel/dime, maybe along with Gregory if we can get anything out of him.

If we want another edge rusher there's Dante Fowler, Everson Griffen, Markus Golden and I think Devon Kennard could be interesting as a DE/OLB hybrid if our defensive scheme is going to be more multiple than in the past.

What's mind-boggling to me right now is that we haven't restructured or cut Crawford yet. We could save about $8 million by cutting him, which is basically the cost of an above average starting player, and at the very least we should be slashing his salary down to about $2-3 million from the current $9 figure if we want to keep him.

I actually think he will be back. The new CBA gives me hope he will be back for good.
I don't think it's even a question now. He will be back unless something crazy happens.

Cut Crawford and sign a NT. It's a no brainer. You can still draft Kinlaw to pair with the DT.
