It’s McCarthy’s next test after Moore. Can he do with Witten what Bill Parcells did to Emmitt Smith?
It's not that simple.
Parcells does like to clean out as much of the locker room as possible in an effort to establish a completely new culture.
That is why he let Emmitt Smith go, but as I said before, it's not as simple as it looked.
Parcells also likes to keep one or two veterans that he believes are professionals that can help kind of be that bridge for the new guard to the old guard -- that's exactly why he kept Darren Woodson.
Granted, Darren Woodson had more in the tank as a player than Emmitt Smith did, but the point is that Emmitt Smith was known as being one of those guys by that point who kind of just did whatever the hell he wanted to. Emmitt was the infamous organizer of the domino games in the locker room, and it was Darren Woodson who began complaining to the players about how they were spending their spare time during losing seasons doing stuff like that as opposed to getting treatment for studying tape.
The point that I'm getting at is that Parcells didn't just cut veterans from the old regime just to do so. There was a method to the madness.
And when it comes to Jason Witten, he has never been a disruptive guy and I think he fits the mold perfectly that Darren Woodson did in that he would be a consummate professional who could help to establish the new way of doing things with the players.
As I alluded to before, as long as he isn't starting and I very much doubt that would be the case with Mike McCarthy, I don't see any harm in bringing in a guy who can be a pretty good coach on the sidelines and an occasional contributor on the field. Likewise, if they decide not to bring him back then it won't bother me one bit.
I just don't think this is as big a deal as some are making it out to be.
