Heath really surprised me this season in general, and in this game particularly.

I like Heath. Best tackler of all the secondary. Has decent speed but still needs some work on coverage of receivers. He gives them too much room and doesn't close as soon as he should. Still a pretty good DB.

I've been down on him since he's been here and often wondered how he manages to stay on the roster. But this year he did show up especially on Sunday. If Byron Jones had played as well as Heath we'd be preparing for Atlanta now. When Heath sacked Rodgers on that last possession, for a split second I thought there was a fumble and he just won us the game. Somehow Rodgers managed to hold on to the ball and Jones couldn't stop the 3rd and 20.

I'd still like an upgrade but Heath at least showed up when it counted this year.

For as much shit as we have thrown on Heath, the guy had 2 really solid plays against the Packers. That INT was a helluva play.
I used to really despise the guy. But somehow starting last season he totally turned things around. He isn't someone you want in man coverage but everything else he is pretty good at. Pretty crazy when I think back to how bad he was early in his career but at some point that panic went away and he turned into a solid contributor.

The INTs are one thing, but Collins proved this year to be a force in the passing game as well as run game. He's someone that you have to pay attention to.

Jones not so much.
He proved he could catch the ball, he was not driving on balls for int's or tracking balls deep.

He cannot play man to man on a consistent basis like Jones does, that's why its not a great comparison.

Jones is a good, not great player, and I highly doubt he ever will be great. Just doesn't have the instincts or the ball skills to be an elite player, but he's still a capable, versatile starting DB, and you can't complain about that with the 29th pick or whatever it was when we took him.

He is definitely a CB/S hybrid though, there's a reason Wilcox or Heath were usually the deep safety in nickel/dime, and he probably plays nearly half of his snaps as a pure CB.
Agreed, I think there is still some upside with him.

He reminds me of Scrandrick who would have great coverage and still give up catches.

The frightening thing is that it's clear that it's by a large margin also. Yesterday, in the most important game of the season, he looked like he was suffering from 'deer in headlights' syndrome and wasn't even close to covering Cook the entire game.
He had 2 pass defensed against Cook where he knocked the ball out of his hands.

Hyperbole much?

Was just wondering. Maybe it's only because I've only seen him play against us. I know he really doesn't get much pressure as far as pass rush but he seems to really play the run well. Other than JPP I really don't know who is out there FA wise to offer up a pass rush.

Thorton and Crawford can go as far as I'm concerned.
Thornton is making a little above backup money why would you get rid of him?

He was really coming on before he got injured.

I thought I told you to go watch a show?

Because I don't think he will amount to much and if we can get better then I'm all for it. It's not going to happen I know but that's just how I see it.

At least Thornton is only counting around 4 mil against our cap. Crawford counting over 10 mil really pisses me off. You should be getting a near franchise player level for that price. Not average rotational guy.

Who the fuck you talking to?

you don't tell me to do shit, check yourself.

And he already amounted to something he got beat out by a guy who had a career year and at the end of the year he was making plays himself.

At worse he is a really good backup or he could allow us to move on from McClain and draft a guy while still having a veteran in the mix for 3 million a year which is still a bargain.

Yep, Crawford at that salary is the real problem. And given the depth on the defensive line and the fact that we hope to add a pass rusher or two, I don't see any reason why we wouldn't cut him.

Crawford costs $10,350,000 if we keep him and $10,400,000 if we cut him. There is really no reason to cut him as long as he can still be a rotational guy.

Sure and then he counts zero against the cap in 2018. Ultimately you save 7.25 mil against the cap. Restructure someone this year if you need room now. You shouldn't view the cap in terms of cap savings in one year.

Crawford needs to go. Cut his ass and bring in Logan or Hankins.
