I want Leary start at one G position regardless of Waters signing.

Definitely.

The guy has held his own and he's already shown in his limited time that he is an upgrade over Livings.

The line has been the pleasant surprise of this preseason for me, but I'm taking it with a grain of salt because of who they've played. This week we get the Cards who have a formidable front 7, so this should be a fairly good test of where this line is.

I hate this mentality. You should almost never play a guy just to find out about him. The first step in finding out about a guy is practice. If he's not showing up in practice it's retarded to count on him for a real game in any sort of way. And it shouldn't matter where he was drafted. It's stupid to just keep compounding your original mistake. Most of the time you can tell from practice.
While I agree with the jist of your comments, veterans like Waters often skip TC by one of many methods including consent of coaching staffs. Dallas isn't alone in this circumstance. Waters is a proven player so knowing that aspect is a given. The primary unknown at this point is his conditioning and attitude. I am of the opinion that you can take a flyer on this situation with a contractual clause that the player has to be on the squad for the entire season and play a specified minimum time to earn 100 percent of his contract pay. I don't like this type of deal but it isn't unheard of with older veterans.

I think he was talking about Arkin. Playing him in a real game just to find out what they more than likely already know about him. If he hasn't shown anything in practice or preseason games, why waste time in a came that counts?

Any ideas as to the money involved? He's taking his time mulling it over, or is just waiting for camp to end maybe?
I am guessing money. He quit the Patriots over money and sat a year.

We probably have a Moore type deal on the table and he wants more.

If so....F it. Roll with Bernadeau and pay the price for signing him in the first place.

I don't see why you'd say F it. We have the space. Offer him a little more.

Maybe he wants more, maybe he doesn't, I can't say for sure.

Either way, I don't think he's ever had any intention of going through a training camp so him signing before this Friday just isn't realistic in my mind. If he wasn't interested he would've turned the offer down by now and said he's staying retired.

That's a poor way to build. If you can only find passable OL in the 1st round you are going to have the entire position blown up in just a few years when contracts are due. Besides, the team needs that first rounder to be its marquee pass rusher and/or anchoring DL of the future.
Yep, I'd rather they just get smarter in the draft process.

Deciding what your biggest weakness was the previous season, and then throwing your 1st rounder at it isn't the best approach.

There hasn't been a strong drafting/team building philosophy on this team in forever...and it's basically because the owner would rather fly by the seat of his pants.

All in, bitches.

How long can Cowboys wait on Brian Waters?

August, 12, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys’ waiting game with offensive guard Brian Waters continues.

How long will it last? The team doesn’t want to set any sort of deadline.

“We want to, at any given time if we got the opportunity, [sign] a player who can help us,” owner/general manager Jerry Jones said. “We don’t want to get caught up in timelines. I don’t want to speculate and I don't want to do anything to cause you to write, ‘Well, he changed his mind.’”

In other words, the Cowboys want the six-time Pro Bowler and aren’t about to screw things up with any sort of ultimatum.

There is a legitimate concern, however, about how much time Waters would need to be ready for the Sept. 8 season opener against the New York Giants, especially considering that the 36-year-old likely has some rust to chip off after sitting out last season. Ideally, the starting offensive line would get at least preseason game’s worth of work, which require Waters to join the Cowboys next week.

However, recent history indicates that Waters doesn’t necessarily need preseason reps to be successful. He signed with the New England Patriots on Sept. 4, 2011 and started every game for a Super Bowl team, earning a Pro Bowl invitation in the process.

“Any time you’re talking about a player getting ready for the regular season, guys need to play, but you understand what the situations are,” head coach Jason Garrett said. “Certainly, some guys are more ready to play than other guys because of the experiences that they’ve had in this league. You kind of weigh where they are physically versus experience versus getting them to play with other people and you try to make your best decision.”

In this case, it appears the best decision for the Cowboys would be to give Waters all the time he needs.

Real translation: I don't want to be embarrassed again like I was when I signed Brandon Moore only to have him fucking retire the next day.

:lol

Pretty much.....but I think Simp is right.

I think the guy wants to play but doesn't want to go through much of the training camp grind. If he didn't want to play, I'm sure he would've turned the offer down by now.

I guess after 12 seasons and his recent success at arriving late in New England he like a lot of veterans feels entitled to miss TC. I know I wouldn't be so anxious to join August two-a-days in North Texas.

It's all well and good that he showed up on september 4 for NE but he wasn't coming off of 18 months of inactivity then and he was 2 years younger.
