C Ryan Cook flunking the conditioning test gives Jason Garrett a prime chance to make an example out of somebody if he wanted to.

Question is, will he do it?

Not likely.

Miles Austin has to be pissed that so many people have beaten him to the hamstring schtick. He's not going to get near as much time as he wants with the team masseuse.

[h=3]Cowboys with offensive line problems to start camp[/h]

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif., -- The Cowboys are not even one practice into training camp and there are problems with the offensive line.

Five offensive linemen will miss Sunday's first practice due to injuries.

Staring left guard Nate Livings, starting right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, backup center Ryan Cook, who started 11 games in 2012, backup left guard Ronald Leary and newly signed tackle Demetress Bell will miss the practice session.

Bernadeau injured his hamstring during the conditioning test on Saturday. Bernadeau was probably going to be limited in his return anyway because of his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. But this latest setback is another example of how difficult the last two offseasons have been for Bernadeau. He missed the entire offseason due to injuries and he missed the start of training camp as well.

Cook and Bell, who are battling for roster spots, failed Saturday's conditioning test.

Livings (foot) and Leary (calf) were injured prior to training camp and coach Jason Garrett said Saturday those players would be day-to-day.

It's unknown when Garrett will have his projected starters along the offensive line for training camp.

Here's the projected first-team offensive line: Left tackle Tyron Smith, left guard David Arkin, center Travis Frederick, right guard Kevin Kowalski and right tackle Doug Free.

They did make an example of Poole last year so you never know.
That was only after Witten was making him look bad in drills.

Ryan Cook won't get made an example of. We just gave up a 7th rounder for him. Gotta make that investment work out and stuff.

Jay Ratliff placed on PUP list

Updated: July 21, 2013, 1:16 PM ET
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys have placed defensive tackle Jay Ratliff on the active/physically unable too perform list after he strained a hamstring in Saturday's conditioning test.

Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler, was limited to six games last season because of an ankle injury and eventual sports hernia surgery. He was also held back in this year's organized team activities and mini-camp in the hopes of keeping him healthy as switched to a new position in the Cowboys' move to the 4-3 defense.

Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau also was placed on the active/PUP list with a hamstring injury. He did not take part in the offseason at all because of shoulder surgery performed after last season.

It is the second straight year that Bernadeau has not been ready at the start of training camp. Knee and hip injuries kept him out of most of camp in 2012, but he started every game.

The Cowboys also placed center Ryan Cook, guard Nate Livings (foot), guard Ronald Leary (calf), long snapper L.P. Ladouceur (calf), tackle Demetress Bell and wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei on the active/non-football injury list.

The Cowboys made official the signings of Bell, Tuinei and quarterback Alex Tanney on Sunday after they passed their physicals.

Last year, running back Felix Jones, safety Brodney Pool and wide receiver Andre Holmes failed the conditioning test and were not cleared to practice until they passed it a few days later. Pool was cut shortly after beginning to practice.

Never read that.

This guy has to be ready to start.

It is clear to me that this bullshit about Ratliff was exactly what I thought it was.

Keep reading fluff about Dunbar that said behind Bryant has had the best offseason work.

That's really good to hear if true. It makes the looming Murray injury easier to swallow.

Monte Kiffin is getting after the D during walkthrough. "Goldang it, that's what I'm talking about!" Not quite same vocabulary as Rob Ryan.

Broaddus: Thoughts On Sunday's Opening Of Training Camp

Posted 30 minutes ago

Bryan Broaddus
Football Analyst/Scout

OXNARD, Calif.
– As another training camp opens for guys like DeMarcus Ware, Tony Romo andJason Witten, there is also a group of players that this is a whole new experience for. Guys likeTravis Frederick, J.J. Wilcox and Gavin Escobar have played football the majority of their young lives, but now there’s so much more on the line because it’s become their career.

Jason Garrett has spoken many times about how difficult it is to play in the National Football League, and no matter how talented you are, there are going to be struggles as a player that you’ll have to go through in order to enjoy success. There is nothing easy about this game and it makes you dig deep within your soul as you go through the journey.

It can be a cruel game and training camp is the worst. You start with 90 brothers that on any other given day you are pulling for with all your heart, but now it becomes a very selfish act, because that brother could be the one guy that puts you on the street along with your dreams. Guys like Ware, Witten and Romo have survived on talent, but they also have survived on mental toughness.

Coaches and scouts will be looking for those players that show the mental toughness to be part of this 53-man roster. For these young players, there will be practices and days where things will not go well, but they have to show mental toughness then to put those times behind them and work toward the next play. There will also be days where they are at their absolute best and they need to build on those times. There is a flow to how training camp works, and to survive you have to be at your physical and mental best.

Every block, tackle, catch and drop will be studied to the point where the memory of it is burned into your head. There will be countless meetings and discussions of how these players have performed. There will be comers and those that fall by the way side. The conditions in Oxnard are perfect for these players to perform, so there is no excuse there. The goal is to find the 53 best players that are both physically and mentally tough. The grind for this front office, coaches and players begins today.
