@rapsheet
The #Cowboys and DC Rod Marinelli have reached an agreement on a contract for him to stay, source said. Big one for Dallas.
BAM

Now go get him some talent. Upgrades at any and every defensive position works for me.

Suh would be amazing, if they could swing it.

Yes it is good news, but do you want to take the chance of Garrett taking back playcalling if we lose Linehan?
Who said anything about this being more important than Linehan? It's a huge deal and has very little to do with Linehan at all. :lol

He did as good a job as anyone could expect with the group he had. What more can you ask? Of course he needs more talent. I've never bought into him being a miracle worker but he's a pretty good DC.
Right. Trying to downplay the job he did with the defense this year is ignorant. Any coach that comes in would need more talent. But I seriously doubt there are many D coordinators out there that could have got the production out of the collection of stiffs we trotted out there, than he did.

Report: Cowboys, Garrett on “brink” of five-year deal

Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2015, 3:54 PM EST

Two days ago, the Cowboys ran out of mojo, only inches from glory. Now, they’re close to closing the deal on a new contract with their head coach.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Cowboys and Garrett are “on the brink” of a five-year 55 million dollar agreement.

Garrett’s contract expired when the Cowboys’ playoff run ended. He’s a free agent, but there has been no suggestion that any other team wants to hire him.

In turn, owner Jerry Jones had no desire to choose for a “mutual parting” or other separation. He wants to stick with what’s working, even though it wasn’t really working in Garrett’s first three years in Dallas.

Once Garrett is signed, the challenge becomes keeping defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who has been linked to the Buccaneers. Likewise, several key players are approaching free agency, including most significantly running back DeMarco Murray and receiver Dez Bryant.
5 year, $55 million?? Jeezus.

You could clone Bill Parcells for that amount of money.

Jones is going lazy again. Too much for a guy with one playoff win.

Though it doesn't count towards the cap it does affect the organization's cash flow in a given year and thus limits the ability to "break the bank" and borrow against the future.

I don't advocate borrowing heavily against the future, but it's good to at least keep the option available.

I mean, who else out there is going to commit 55 million to Garrett??

That's fine. I see our window at about 3 years anyway.

Depends, a good amount of that money could be incentives. Sort of like the Harbaugh deal for Michigan.
I agree. The base is probably around 3.25 M and the other is media perks and win incenatives.
