It was fucked at his hire, err, I mean the Parsons trade. Yeah, that is it.
Some part of the alure to come back to Dallas and be the DC had to have been the prospect of coaching one of the league's elite pass rushers.

His defense has sucked so badly this season, but his GM kinda screwed him dry on that notion.

Another thing to consider about trading away Mazi Smith. His rookie contract is fully guaranteed. His cap hit for this year is 3.3 mil. Next year is 4.2 mil

We would have that when we cut him after this trade was finalized. The Jets agreeing to take him off our hands moves that guaranteed wasted money on to their cap and off of ours. So they can have that when they cut him later.

Defensive players I'd clearly take over Williams for the next 3 years: Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, Maxx Crosby, Aidan Hutchinson, Jared Verse, Nik Bonitto, Will Anderson Jr.

Toss-up's: Dexter Lawrence, TJ Watt, Chris Jones, Jalen Carter, Jeffrey Simmons, Zach Allen, DeForest Buckner, Byron Murphy, Patrick Surtain, Nick Bosa

If the time horizon were just 1-2 years Watt and Jones would probably be in the "clear take" category, whereas if we're talking 5 years guys like Carter and Murphy would be in the take category, but either way I think it's clear that Williams is in the range of a top 15 defensive player in the league to build around for the next few years.

And this is why I'm not worried about his age:

Chris Jones from 29 to 31 (this year): 10.5/13/29, 5/9/20, 2/5/8, 2X 1st team All Pro and Pro Bowl
Leonard Williams from 29 to 31 (this year): 5.5/10/16, 11/16/28, 4/4/11, 2024 Pro Bowl, likely to make it this year again
DeForest Buckner from 29 to 31 (this year): 8/11/21, 6.5/8/14, 4/9/13, 2023 Pro Bowl, likely to make it this year again
Cam Heyward: Pro Bowler from the age of 29-33, and again last year at 35

That's sacks/TFL/QB hits, all playing at a Pro Bowl level up to age 31 and who knows how much longer into the future for the ones that are currently 31.

Williams isn't going to turn 29 until the very end of next year so we could easily be looking at 3-5 years of Pro Bowl level play starting in 2026.

If Clark is released, the Micah deal looks even worse...no chance of that happening.

We're sticking with Eberflus for at least the entirety of this season, no matter how bad that defense continues to perform, simply because he was Jerry's pick and he can't bring himself to admit he fucked up and subject himself to questions.

But yet that same Jerry is going to cut loose a guy that was part of the Micah trade just one season after acquiring him?

:lol

I swear, it's like these guys have no idea what team they're covering.

Clark does have a big cap number next year and there is an out after this season.

But I'm with you guys, his being in the Micah deal makes it much more likely we find a way to keep him. I hope he negotiates down some, which doesn't usually happen, but I think if they match whatever he can find, he might be a high-character enough guy that he wants to stay with the team who wanted him and showed him plenty of love.

I bet they'll try to get Clark to take a pay cut but you can't get rid of him or else you're sort of back in the same spot without any space eaters on the interior.

Williams would be your best run stuffer and you didn't make the big investment in him to be a space-eating 1T, he's going to be the centerpiece of the defense and needs Clark around to do the dirty work so he can fly upfield and make plays.

Clark can be an Elon man's version of Hankins, do the dirty work at 1T, push the pocket with his bull rush and let Williams and Osa pass rush and shoot gaps.
