It's not that the teams were complaining about it, it's that the media is now pointing out how it's blatant cheating/ignorant officiating.

The NFL hates bad press so now that the big talk shows are going to be dissecting this play every week, you can expect it to eventually go away or be less effective.
Curious to see how well it works when they aren't allowed to cheat? Or are they only going to call the false start but let the offsides slide.

In addition to the Irvin and Erik Williams rule which were at least altered in the offseason, remember when the NFL:
  • Made it illegal for Maher to have that little marker the week of our Tampa Bay playoff game, leading to the debacle of missed XPs
  • Mid season suddenly flagged our snapper Ladoceur for his rolling the ball into snapping position

That's a damn good memory.

If that play isn't a viable strategy anymore week in and week out it's going to be a massive hit to their offense, primarily because their QB can't throw the ball straight and is as much a rotational RB as he is a QB.

Their offense is pretty clearly designed for throwing short of the sticks and then cheating their way to that last yard or two over and over again to sustain drives.

And fucking spare me that they don't know they are cheating. They are daring the refs to call them for lining up over the ball and for moving early, both of which are explicitly illegal, and also pushing their QB forward in the pile which isn't explicitly illegal but should be, as it's taking unfair advantage of the forward momentum rule where the ball carrier's forward momentum is essentially stopped but for the push from the rear by non ball carriers.

It's not just that "everyone could do this, the Eagles are just more skilled at doing it." The Eagles are gaming the system and the refs swallow their whistles in the face of obvious cheating. Yes, I'm sure the Eagles are probably "more skilled," at cheating like this.

I do not doubt for one second they have been coached and instructed by coaches and team leaders like Kelce to cheat as much as the refs will let them get away with, they have probably practiced jumping the whistle early in fact, they've probably practiced subtly lining up offsides to get an illegal edge too.

You know full well that if the Cowboys were lining up offsides it would be called every goddamn time.

Pretty much, it's best for the sport that the entire thing is regulated out one way or the other, by rules changes, "points of emphasis" or both.

Traditional QB sneaks? Sure, that's an important part of the game.

But not this bullshit.

They will probably still be a really good QB sneak team. They have a great O-line and a QB who is really good at running the ball with power. But make them do it within the rules. Call it when their O-lineman are moving before the snap. Call it when the center is lined up half a yard to a yard over the line of scrimmage. Call it when the guards and tackles are also in the neutral zone because the center is so far past the ball.

This doesn't seem hard. If a WR is past the ball on the line of scrimmage they get called for a penalty. Why is it that we just don't call it in these situations? It's just such a weird situation to me. I'm not sure why the Eagles get special treatment or why the NFL would invite all other teams to do the same? And if that's the case why doesn't every NFL team cheat the way the Eagles do? I guess I really don't understand anything at all.

Yea they'll still be good but it won't be as automatic to where they can casually just go for it on 4th and 1 on their own 32 or whatever, nor will it be an automatic TD when it's 4th and goal on the 1-1.5.

Like smitty said, I believe they purposely strategize around getting into 3rd and 4th and short, knowing it's basically a 95% proposition.

Even if it goes down to a 75% proposition that will be enough to tack 1-2 more losses on, which could easily be the difference between winning the division or being a wild card.

Why did Lane Johnson get to move before the snap play after play with nothing called?

Which come to think of it I didn't see him do that last time. Did they quietly make him stop? Even if so, they him do it for literally years.

No question about it. Most teams that average 3.0 ypc if they run the ball three times will be punting on fourth down. The Eagles can basically do that and score a TD on every drive knowing that the 4th and one is a gimmie. It's a massive advantage. Even if it's only a 25% chance of failure on the QB sneak it really changes everything.
