This is probably true but ultimately they should be looking to extend Tyler and Bland now anyway, so if this is what it took to spur them on, so be it.
Absolutely, both players should be extended. They are important pieces going forward. And as we have seen with many other NFL teams, you can actually do more than one extension in an offseason.

Not even that but the fun part about the cap is an extension on Ferg for example, actually freed up cap space in 2025. So it's not like you need extra money to do this shit.

I don't understand how we can be that critical of either side of the Micah deal when we don't even know what each party is asking.

The 105.3 guys were saying Micah's agent is pretty much the best and toughest, and regularly gets "firsts" in his contracts, meaning record money for a safety or more guaranteed money or whatever. It's very possible that he's asking for a number (or other condition) so high they don't want to pay it, and probably shouldn't.

I generally agree if you compartmentalize this specific scenario. We have no idea exactly what's being asked for, and ultimately there's no reason to think there's much of an issue unless there's no extension by week 1.

The only thing that makes people scoff is the history the team has with how they've managed extensions over the past 5-10 years, with this following the same pattern.

I hate to be a broken record, but I don't know why people expect these stars to sign early when everyone can see how much salaries are going up every year. Unless for some reason they're especially paranoid about injury, I'm not sure who would sign for 35 million a year when they know they can wait a year and get 40, 42, maybe even 45 million. And I don't follow this, but it seems like agents and the market have gotten more sophisticated about buying insurance against injury, so maybe that's not even such an issue anymore.

Now I could see it more on a guy like a Bland or Ferguson who haven't made a fortune on their rookie contracts, but the high picks have plenty of money to wait things out.

Micah is different. He's such an enormous impact on the defense that they shouldn't really bristle at paying him at the top of the market.

And, this front office has long ago abdicated the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to assume they're the problem until proven otherwise since it's pretty consistent with what we've seen from them in the past.

Honestly, Parsons can go get fucked, just like I thought about Dak, if he wants to be the highest paid anything other than highest paid defensive player on the team. How can anyone with a job description of defensive lineman claim to be deserving of being the highest paid non Qb in history when you fucking suck against the run?

I think there's an argument in the case of Lamb, although they could've easily gotten him done almost as soon as Justin Jefferson did his extension last year and instead they waited an extra 2-3 months for...reasons?

In the case of Dak they dragged their feet twice and paid more twice, and I think that's pretty inarguable. They did it the first time, which led to the ridiculous contract that stipulated that there would be no use of a franchise tag, which led to them being forced to pay $5M/year more than the recently signed highest deals last year in Love and Lawrence.

But the real sin of it all is that in general, such as in the case of Lamb and Parsons and now Tyler (which may actually get done), if they had done extensions after year 3 you have more years left on the current contract to prorate numbers and bring down salary. So if you sign an elite guy on a rookie contract after year 3 vs. after year 4, the actual numbers on the extensions might be roughly the same but because you have more years left on the contract after year 3 there's more flexibility to play with the numbers.

And you could argue that maybe our guys just aren't willing to play ball, but when you see elite players all across the league signing deals earlier in their rookie contracts than what our front office does (many guys on the Eagles, Penei Sewell, Patrick Surtain, Ahmad Gardner, etc.), not to mention QB's like Josh Allen and freaking Mahomes himself getting done without waiting until the last year of the deal, you have to figure that it isn't just an issue of our players not being willing to do it.

That's true. I still think Jerry screwed himself with the Zeke deal. Not only did he let himself be put over a barrel, he then kissed Zeke's ass as much as ever even when he was washed. I think that's why these agents -- for the superstars, anyway -- know there's no point in signing early because Jerry will always cave.

It all goes back to Jerry's ego. He's desperate for his guys, the ones he drafted and the ones he especially likes, to stay no matter what.

But I think my point still stands. What if Micah's agent is asking for $45 million a year? Do you pay that?

Yea I wouldn't be opposed to them making a move to break the habit as a signal to the rest of the league/agents, potentially even one as dramatic as trading Parsons if we get a massive enough haul (two 1's, a 2 and 3 at a bare minimum).

Maybe getting a top of the market extension done with Tyler after year 3 would qualify though.

Right, at some point I think you have to break that perception, although I'm not saying with Micah. As flawed against the run as Micah is, I still think we should keep him because he is a stud. And I do think he cares and loves the game.

Why? So when he's getting mauled in November and December against the run we can feel good about his 14 sacks?

The defense is much better with him. He's one of the biggest impact players in the league, and at times nearly unblockable.

He has skills that are very difficult to find.

Run defense pluggers you can find. Guys don't get paid for that.

The impact that Parsons has on the field vs when he is off the field is massive. We can bitch about all kinds of shit. But the impact is right up there with any defensive player in the NFL. To say otherwise is to fabricate a narrative.
