Watching that Roku show on the 23 draft with all the war room Deuce footage, I'm curious what you guys think happened here with him. I don't buy that they only drafted him because of his dad; several of us talked about how good he was at K-State well before that draft. He seemed to be at least one of the highest on their board at the time. The debate they showed was between him and Brooks, who they got later anyway.

I thought maybe Mike was too biased against him because of his size, but MM seemed okay with him. Jerry specifically asked if he was too small to play and Mike said no, we just have to use him the right way.

What do you think the deal was? I don't think there's much doubt he can run the ball. Was Mike too biased against him? Was he legitimately too small to pass block? Did they insist on someone who could break more tackles? What happened?
This team doesn't use gadget guys well. We love the idea but on game day it just doesn't come to fruition. And I think they viewed Deuce as a gadget guy. And frankly I don't think his running and catching is good enough to going over and beyond to carve out that role for. But you'll notice, we don't really do the specific role thing. We don't have a specialized slot receiver, we just use Lamb all over. We don't have a specialized TE, we really just want a guy who can do everything. At RB, they may say a guy is a third down back for example, but we never really limit a guy to that role. Plus you're talking about a late round pick, sometimes those guys just aren't actually that good.

Now under Schotty maybe that changes. His overly sensitive heart may love to throw Deuce a bone. But I hope they aren't going to change anything with the draft plans based on it. You just can't reserve a role for a 176 pound RB and pass on someone like RJ Harvey who is 205 pounds because you think Deuce can do some of the things Harvey can do.

I was a Duece supporter from day 1 but this team can't utilize him properly. Some teams could give him that chance to succeed but we have no desire to be creative no matter who is running the team. It doesn't take rocket science to know that you don't run him between the tackles but it always seemed like that's where he tried to run.

Then again his ceiling might just have been as a very good college player.

Some awesome college players games just don't translate well to the NFL. He was a blast in college. But limited size, limited straight line speed and he just sort of gets lost in the NFL (Literally and figuratively). It's the same reason I'm not high on Skattebo. Fun as hell to watch in college. But I look at him and I just don't see something that is going to translate that well to the NFL. Not that he won't have a role in the NFL. But I don't see a guy who is going to be a #1 RB. More of a #2 complimentary guy. Someone that comes off the bench for 5-10ish carries a game and a couple catches.

Good answers... I'm more (I think) on Rev's side that Deuce can play, or at least he can run the ball, and they just wouldn't try him. I still say that game where we were up 40 or whatever on the Giants and he got a bunch of snaps into loaded boxes skewed his average down. But there have been other games where he showed he can make yards. That's why I don't get why they didn't run him more.

My guess is still that they think 176 was just too light to pass block, but I don't know.

Of course, worthless Zeke being on the team didn't help. I almost wonder if Deuce got caught between a Jerry/Zeke and Mike/Rico war. Maybe they'll give him more of a chance with BS now, or maybe they take two bigger backs and he's released.

He's not the most welcoming target in the pass game either. Seemed like any time he got a chance for a catch he was overthrown.

He was and I can't help but think being so tiny makes it a little challenging to throw him the ball.

I think he didn’t distinguish himself as a rusher relative to his downsides in pass protection, so yeah I think he needed to have broken more tackles.

I don’t think they felt safe with him guarding Dak vs heavy blitzes

I think you're probably right about his inability to pass block. If you're going to have several deficits, you really need to be exceptional in other areas, and I just don't see it often enough to keep him on the roster. I will say, I got tired of seeing him in college. He wore OU out while he was there.

Stephen was talking up "Seat Belt" Carson in the PC today. He's back from injury so I guess now we can see how great he really is. :doh

I mean I'm hoping the guy can play. I liked him before and after we drafted him. But last season was rough when he was forced to play early on.

Better pass rush would help that a ton.
