This is starting to feel like the Brady Belichick debate.

I think both helped each other. I don't think it's that hard to understand.
True, but given a choice between a great player and a great coach, I'd take the player every time.

I probably would too, but only because it's much harder to find a replacement for the player than the coach (Walsh to Seifert for example).

Not necessarily easy either way though (Favre's career between Holmgren and McCarthy for example).

Just like Walsh Montana, Noll Bradshaw, Holmgren Favre, Johnson Aikman, and so forth.
Yeah, it wasn't even my intention. Andy Reid was always a great coach though. He went to a Superbowl with a different team and different QB. He has won a lot of games with a QB who was probably only top 20ish in the NFL at best. But yeah ultimately to be a HOF coach, he needed a HOF caliber QB. True in almost all cases.

But Reid before Mahomes doesn't feel that much different than McCarthy. If anything comes out of this, it's that maybe McCarthy should be given a much longer leash.

Alex Smith had one winning season his entire career before going to KC. In KC he had like 5 straight winning seasons. I think he got more wins out of Alex Smith than any other coach humanly could.
And maybe MM got more wins - or close enough - out of Dak than almost anyone could.

I mean, it's eight years now and when he came in he had the best OL and maybe RB in football. The last few years he's had very good defenses. Maybe this is about all there is.

Could be, I almost feel like McCarthy deserves a chance with a JJ McCarthy type. But he will never get that chance. Let Dak be the Alex Smith to a developing JJ McCarthy. A guy who has a lot of physical tools but would benefit greatly from a year on the bench.

Of course on the flip side Dak has been saddled with Garrett and Moore, two guys who make QBs look even worse than they are. Poor guy has only had one year of McCarthy actually running the offense. The first OC I can say who actually helped him.

What I do know is if this team can't do more this year McCarthy is going to be out for sure. I'm just not sure that is actually the right move. It's Dak who should be moving on with McCarthy having a chance to develop a QB.

This year, IMO, was Dak's absolute ceiling. I've no doubt they plan on making him the highest paid player in the league and then his decline will begin .

Totally OT, but I'm surprised you guys are so high on JJ McCarthy. I admit I watched him more last year than this one, but he always stuck me as just a good college QB.

Agree completely with this. Might be unfair to MM, but that's life in the big leagues I guess.

I'm pretty sure Jerry's plan is to extend Dak and if the team doesn't do great this year, get a Ben Johnson or Slowik to try to fix him.

But the best trainer in the world can't win the Kentucky Derby with a slow horse.

I'm not even sure Dak is "the problem" but I think I agree that it's going to take a special talent at QB in Dallas to win. Dak could benefit from a fresh start where the pressure is removed from his shoulders and he can play more loose. Go to a team where the city doesn't put so much pressure on the QB. Just sort of feels like Dak is cracking here. He needs to be able to go back to earlier in his career where he could just play loose and free.

As far as JJ McCarthy, he does great dealing with the pressure of big moments. He has legs he has an arm. He has just played in a somewhat sheltered and limited role. It's why I think he would benefit from sitting and developing but the upside is high. Like franchise QB high.

I have been reading more and more how the public is higher on Penix and Nix and lower on McCarthy than NFL evaluators.

Yeah I am not a fan of Bo Nix at all. Penix is interesting to me but he is almost the opposite of Bo Nix. Penix is bombs away with arguably the best receivers in college football. But that's not really realistic in the NFL. Still I'll take that over what Bo Nix is any day. Which is system, get the ball out quick with short quick passes all game long.

JJ McCarthy feels more like the complete package. He has plenty of starts and experience too. He just played in an offense that didn't live or die by him throwing the ball. It was more like they just used McCarthy when they needed him. But when they did the dude was clutch.

Almost forgot about this but it reminds me how much I love Zimmer.

My concern," says defensive coordinator Mike
Zimmer in the middle of the tape, "is his run-support ability."
That is the only discouraging word heard during the 21-minute
video.]

Scout Jim Garrett: "You divorce yourself from reality if you look
at both guys [Buchanon and Jammer] and don't think this guy's
better. He's like a veteran. Buchanon would be my choice, hands
down."

Jones: "Our grades put him under Jammer. Our exercise before was
invalid if we don't put him under [Oklahoma safety] Roy
Williams."

Zimmer: "All the scouts but you, Tom, have Jammer graded higher
[than Buchanon]. My question is this: Is the best safety to come
out in nine years not as good as the second-best corner in this
draft?"

Ciskowski: "Mike, all I'm asking is this: If you had a football
person watch tape of both, I bet they'd say Buchanon's a better
player."

Garrett: "Absolutely."

Zimmer: "I think I'm a football person."
Jim Garrett :laff

Jim Garrett :laff

Zimmer: "Doesn't matter. It's gonna happen to me either way. I'll
tell you what, you can put mine on tape: We pick Jammer and he's
not a player, fire me."

That's a hell of a quote.

I don't see 1st or 2nd round QB talent either. He strikes me as just a run of the mill QB who goes in the 4th round or later.
