He is a hell of an athlete. I hope it starts to translate in an offense that actually enjoys using the TE. I don't know, I can admit I might be wrong on the guy. But I also think he has a high floor because of his ability as a blocker. This isn't Bossman but I also don't think this is Diggs.
I'd run too if I had to throw to a guy old enough to be a booster.
I too detect weakening.Booze is coming around on the pick, I can feel it.
The issue with him is he isn't elusive after the catch at all, he might be a slightly bigger, slightly faster Schultz who can run 10 yards down field turn around, catch the ball then turn upfield for 2-3 yards, but that's about it.He is a hell of an athlete. You'd love to see if they can get him up the seam and behind the defender when he catches it so maybe he can run away from the S or LB. Because we know he's not going to make people miss just catching it underneath. The issue with him is he isn't elusive after the catch at all, he might be a slightly bigger, slightly faster Schultz who can run 10 yards down field turn around, catch the ball then turn upfield for 2-3 yards, but that's about it.
Yeah I totally agree. The only difference is if you can get this kid to catch the ball in stride he has more "run away" ability. But Ferguson is a better YAC guy in my opinion. He is actually fun to watch after the catch. The issue with him is he isn't elusive after the catch at all, he might be a slightly bigger, slightly faster Schultz who can run 10 yards down field turn around, catch the ball then turn upfield for 2-3 yards, but that's about it.
If you want a TE that gets Yac that's probably not going to be him. If you want a TE that gets open consistently and catches the ball, I think that could be him. I'm ok with that if he is able to stretch the defense in the process. I think the difference with him between mediocre TE and really good TE is if he is going to be able to run the seam effectively and things like that. If he can beat LBers deep, it will open things up.I don't know how good Schoonmaker will be, but I am sure that he is fortunate to have landed in Dallas.
Dak has a knack for TEs. He brings out the best in them. There's a very good chance that between McCarthy and Dak, Schoonmaker's athleticism will be fully exploited.
have him watch tape of Kelce. If he can figure out how to be open like Kelce is he will be very successful. If you want a TE that gets Yac that's probably not going to be him. It's not the getting open thing that is the problem with him. It's the staying on his feet after the catch that is the problem.have him watch tape of Kelce. If he can figure out how to be open like Kelce is he will be very successful.
Pretty much. The guy is 6'5" 250 pounds, you'd think he would run over some guys. But nope, he just kind of gets tackled. Honestly, we had the same thing with Witten for a long time and dude is a hall of famer, so it's not impossible for him to still be a great TE (Although I think at the begining of Witten's career it was different, halfway through it was literally catch the ball, turn inside and get tackled)It's not the getting open thing that is the problem with him. I think that is exactly why it wasn’t hell or high water to get the best TE available.Pretty much. The guy is 6'5" 250 pounds, you'd think he would run over some guys. On the other hand you have Ferguson with the lowest score on that graphic and he is out there leaping NFL defenders to make a big play. Instincts and contact balance can't really be calculated in a RAS. Gosh just look at his highlights from last year, Ferguson on almost every play was taking the ball and getting extra yards. Watching it just got me excited about what Ferguson can do this year. I hope they let that dude eat.
I know it will make some people shiver from past experience, but I think they viewed it as they need a second TE. Plus Ferguson got hurt some last year. So if he goes down you don't want to be stuck with just Hendershot.I think that is exactly why it wasn’t hell or high water to get the best TE available.
This is more of what I meant comparing his ability to Kelce. He runs decent routes and finds an opening in the defense. Then keeps moving to give the QB a chance to find him without the defense sitting on him. If he can do that at this level he will be pretty good
He does a great job catching the ball and getting open. But of all those plays he had YAC in what one? And that was a screen that was blocked extremely well and I'm still not sure he got in the endzone. But that's my only complaint. I see everything else there. But for a guy that size with those athletic traits, it's disappointing to not see more after the catch. But running after the catch isn't the only quality that matters with a TE. And maybe he just needs different opportunities to show off the speed after the catch.
