There's no way to rationalize taking him in the 2nd.

He would've been a solid pick in the 3rd, that's the long and short of it. He might end up being a bit better than Ferguson at some point in his rookie year but at the end of the day he's not going to be a dynamic playmaker and we basically just took a guy in the 2nd who we're hoping ends up being as good as Schultz.

Watching more video of him, you can see he's much faster than Ferguson. It's not just a 40, he plays fast, almost like an oversized WR.

I think the reason he doesn't look athletic and that RAS surprised some of us is he doesn't do much after the catch. Where Kincaid ran like a Kittle type madman after the catch, Luke just kind of goes in a straight line and gets what's there, doesn't break tackles or overpower people. But he is moving fast to get there in his route and after he gets the ball.

And at least he's not hurt, a headcase, or a project. I bet he contributes a lot more than Bossman Fat. Low bar I admit, just saying I seriously doubt he's a bust. And that's worth something given our history.

He'll be an ok TE, maybe an above average starter, but that's still pretty shitty in the 2nd.

Above average starter is pretty shitty?

Good damn. People’s expectations are insane.
I said maybe an above average starter, like that's his ceiling, in the range of scenarios I'd say in most of them he's just an average starter or a good 2nd TE. Overall I'd say that's shitty in the 2nd, would've been fine in the 3rd.

I really want to like this pick because of his athletic ability. But every time he makes a catch I feel like I'm waiting for the guy to make something happen and then he just sort of doesn't. He catches the ball and runs until someone hits him and he goes down.

I just don't get it. I really don't. To me this is a fourth round TE like a Schultz or Ferg. He has better athletic traits then those guys but after he catches the ball I don't see them.
