New Defensive Coordinator - Christian Parker

Parker it is. Working on a contract.

Not upset about it. Preferred Leonhard, but Parker was #2 and no Gannon. Boom or bust and definitely outside the box for the Cowboys and Jerry.

So it's obviously only a matter of time until Eberflus is gone, let's see your rankings of who we want to replace him. For now I'm just going to assume that everyone that is a tossup (Bowles, etc.) become available:

1. Brian Flores
2. Todd Bowles
3. Jim Schwartz
4. Jim Leonhard
5. Leslie Frazier
6. Jonathan Gannon
7. Al Harris
8. Raheem Morris
9. Mike Pettine
10. Christian Parker (fuck it, if the cupboard is this bare let's just poach a few coaches from the Eagles defensive staff and hope it fucks them a bit)

I don't think it's that simple. Leonhard probably has the Giants and Packers above us and let us know.

My guess is Leonhard probably knows where he is going. Just can't sign on the dotted line yet. But we may have also just preferred the guy we picked.

Bonus points are that if Parker does get a head coaching opportunity by killing it for us, we get draft compensation.

The Fangio thing is hot right now and he is about the only guy that has been with him even back to Denver. This is a pretty big gamble because he has never coordinated an entire defensive unit or called plays.

So in terms of defensive coordinators I actually have been a bigger fan of Fangio than Vance Joseph. But I have a ton of respect for both those guys. From the beginning I liked the idea of plucking a guy from either of those proverbial coaching trees. If you can't get the best, then go get a guy who is the top assistant from the best. I just don't think a top veteran defensive coordinator was ever out there to be had. There were no Vic Fangio types hanging out ready to be hired.

I leaned Leonhard because I like his history at Wisconsin. But Parker was my second choice. And honestly what he did with that DBs in Philly was impressive. I know they invested some draft capital in guys like Cooper and DeJean. But we see lots of corners busts in the NFL and he got those two guys to play at really high levels right away in their careers. That speaks volumes to me. Especially considering that Dallas may be investing a top pick at corner this year and we have a guy in Revel who is very green but very physically talented. We need someone who can develop our DBs.

Anyway, surprisingly good choice in my opinion. I just don't think this will blow up in our faces. Worst case scenario he is mediocre. Which is still better than what we had last year.

I think we will see an end to the "Corners must be tall and long" category (Or a certain skin color). I think based on the Eagles depth chart we will just worry about getting the best corners possible.

I'm happy. He was probably #2 to (or even 1a with) Leonhard.

I was really afraid we'd wait too long in this game of musical chairs and we'd be the ones standing with nothing (Whitecotton or similar).

I preferred Leonhard because he's the more recognizable name and has been in our consciousness for longer, but honestly his experience and profile as a coach is not that different than Parker's.

Leonhard has previous DC experience at the college level but Parker actually has more NFL experience and at different stops.

I said a few days ago that Leonhard and Parker were basically 1A and 1B for me once I figured out that most of the established guys like Bowles, Flores, etc. weren't actually available, so I'm very happy with it.

I don't want any white corners.

Edit: I like this hire.

That's true but unless you want a Gannon that's the kind of guy you're going to end up with.

Mike Macdonald was never an NFL DC before he went to Baltimore, had an elite defense for two years and then went to Seattle. Same with Campanile, no DC experience and I bet he's going to end up as the Arizona HC after one year. Shula in LA is the same deal.

Outside of the established DC types Parker was at the top of my list along with Leonhard, and I think they're more or less the same type of coaching prospects.
