Machota: How the Cowboys plan to address biggest hole on their roster

On the flip side when Mesidor was 22 would you have taken him in the top 10?

Obviously not but improvement isn't always linear or guaranteed.

Like maybe he's maxed out, or maybe once he gets into an NFL strength program and trains with NFL coaches there's still untapped potential. There's no guarantee a guy like Faulk will improve at the same rate just because he's 21 and Mesidor is 25, it's possible and something to weigh in your decision making, but some guys just stop getting better for various reasons.

All I know is Mesidor is one of the best pass rushers in the draft right now and if we can get him at 20 you have to consider it.

And I agree. Hell Faulk regressed in college from 2024 to 2025 where you'd have expected him to do the opposite. But maybe its coaching and the scheme.

I like Mesidor, I really do. I also really hate that he is 25. He is in his prime already.

I don't know. They might be close to 20-30 for me. But I'd also have guys like Faulk, Zion Young, Boston, Concepcion, Terrell and Hood lower then them. Because I'm not that high on those guys. For another team those guys all might be higher. So my guess is my 15th best player for example will be available at 20 because I'll have a number of guys that go top 20 lower on my board.
The EDGE rusher in Young over almost any of the LB’s for me. That’s one of your best defensive talent plays barring one of the guys like Woods falling, but even Young isn’t worth pick 20, not straight up— though close within 6-7 picks. I love the trade from 20 with Buffalo for 26 and 91.

Again if you trade down from 12, you can have maybe have both Young and Rodriguez from the picks you net. Hell, Rodriguez, Golday, or Hill might even fall to 92 naturally. Young will not. I think Young is better than Howell, though Howell is a better fit in a pure 3-4. Still I take the better talent in Young.

That’s one commodity that is deep but there is a dropoff after Dennis-Sutton, Jacas, and Malachi Lawrence.

Somehow I don't love Mesidor. Hard to say why. Maybe just not sure he's special enough to overcome the age (which I usually don't put as much stock in as others) plus already having surgeries on his feet.

I agree. Nothing against Zion but he is another guy I just don't trust to ever be more that a 4-6 sack a year NFL player.
I don’t think anyone was advocating Young at 20. In fact I specifically called out he’s not worth 20. What I love about the guy is how he keeps getting better, got leaner and faster it seemed too.

But definitely after 25 or so. I certainly don’t think he makes it to pick 40, but it’s prolly 50-50 whether he goes in the bottom 1st or top of 2nd

Zion Young is a guy I’m ok drafting at 92. If we use a first on him, I’m rioting. If we target him with a second after a trade down, I’m still pissed.

I don’t think he’s anything special. He’s a guy you like on your roster. But as a complimentary piece. Not as your top 1-2 guys.

I was just discussing him in the context of Hill/Rodriguez at 20 vs the other options if we can't find a trade down partner. I just think those two LBers will be bigger impact players than Zion Young. It's nothing against Zion, I think he is a good player and someone you want on the roster. But not someone that will ever be viewed as an impact player. I could however see Rodriguez or Hill being a real impact player on defense. Someone that will change games and the complexion of the defense.

Agreed. He has no burst, no bend, and very little athleticism. He just has the build and is good at run defense.

Fwiw, I saw the McGinn grumpy scout report on the edges, and they have Zion third, ahead of Faulk, Mesidor, and Howell. I don't see it myself but...

To me this is where systems matters.

But if I'm looking for a full-sized 4-3 DE to me there are just as good if not better options in the second. Grumpy Scouts rankings aren't always great.

He has developed good bend but his problem is he lives on that and his swim moves.

I think an NFL program will change that limitation.

I appreciate his ability to develop and improve. He showed that at the Senior Bowl too from drills to his play on the field.

Probably guys like Peter Woods, Kayden McDonald, Keldric Faulk, TJ Parker, Avion Terrell, Brandon Cisse, Colton Hood, Mcneil-Warren, and the 3 LBers would be in the next tier, imo.
Depressing but accurate list.
