Ya, sounded like a silly excuse to me too because these are newer helmets, so I'm not sure how they wouldn't be up to current standards.

The teams just took the decals off this year. No team has worn an alternate helmet.
It makes no sense because college teams are wearing new ones every couple of weeks.

Terrance Williams ready for return duty

IRVING, Texas -- Dwayne Harris has been one of the Dallas Cowboys' more underrated players. He is a dynamic returner and is tied for the team lead in special-teams tackles.
A hamstring injury will keep Harris out of Thursday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and leave the Cowboys with some holes to fill.
Terrance Williams will replace Harris as the kick returner and hopes to fill in as well as he did as a receiver after Miles Austin suffered a hamstring injury. He had one return for 21 yards against the New York Giants after Harris got hurt.
“Dwayne is one of the best returners so I’m just trying to keep the yards up so we can start off with good drives, like he’s been giving us all year,” Williams said. “I’m just trying to keep his spot nice and hot until he gets back so he can just be ready to go.”
Harris is second in the NFL in kickoff returns, averaging 31.3 yards. He's also second in punt-return average at 14 yards. Cole Beasley will take over the punt-return duties.
Williams returned kickoffs his first two years at Baylor, averaging 22.3 yards a return with a long of 51. During the season he has worked as a returner in practice and in pregame warmups.
"Growing up, it was that type of mentality, just like running away from the other people," Williams said. "But here I think Coach Bisaccia, his plan and his scheme is to where if the blockers do their job like they’re supposed to, then we can just find a hole and keep running.”
Williams’ speed is a big reason why the Cowboys want him to return kicks.
“Terrance is a big, strong guy who runs north and south,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Once he gets going as a kick returner, I think you feel is speed, you feel is heat and that’s a good thing. He’s fearless running up in there. I think he’s handled it well so far.”

IRVING – If you are a superstitious sort and a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, you might have trouble sleeping tonight.
For starters, the club will be wearing its dreaded blue jerseys Thursday against Oakland. Adding to the fans anxiety, Sports Illustrated released the news Wednesday that Romo will be on the cover of their Dec. 2 issue with the headline: “Why America’s Whipping Boy Deserves Your Unconditional Love.”
For years, fans have considered the blue jerseys bad luck. And the SI cover jinx is known throughout the land.
The Cowboys will wear the same road blue jerseys they sported in the Week 4 loss at San Diego.
Dallas had planned to wear their throwback blue jerseys and their throwback helmets for Thanksgiving, but that was before the NFL informed clubs in September it had banned throwback helmets for safety reasons. The league was concerned the throwback helmets might not be broken in properly and could lead to concussions.
This will be the first time since 1964 that the Cowboys will don their blue, non-throwback jerseys at home.

Garrett has not forgotten that Terrelle Pryor might see action for Raiders
The Cowboys are prepared for Matt McGloin, but they know there’s a chance Terrell Pryor might play, also.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Raiders offensive line coach Tony Sporano is good with running quarterbacks.
“Tony does a great job incorporating that type of a player into the scheme,” Garrett said. “It’s a power-running football team, and that’s what he’s always liked. And that’s why he’s been so good as a coach. He believes in that and does it well, and does it with a lot of different pieces, depending on what team he’s with.”
Pryor has run for 504 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders are now going with McGloin, but they used a wildcat formation twice last week against Tennessee.
“I think they did a really good job using the quarterback, and now a different quarterback’s playing,” Garrett said. “But there’s always the threat of that other quarterback coming in.”

Darren McFadden to face Cowboys

IRVING, Texas -- As expected, Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden will play on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys for the first time since aggravating his strained right hamstring on Nov. 3.
It sets up an intriguing situation for Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson, with Rashad Jennings excelling in the absence of McFadden, who has missed three straight games and four overall this season.
Olson, though, said this week the Raiders would ride the "hot hand" of Jennings, who has rushed for 413 yards the past four weeks while averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen concurred.
"The guy that's in there and being the most effective will be the guy that gets the opportunity," Allen said Wednesday. "But I see them both getting a chance to carry the ball. We'll see how it goes. We'll play (it) out as the game plays along."
The injury-prone McFadden, who is in the final year of his rookie contract after being the No. 4 overall draft pick in 2008, has missed 17 of the Raiders' past 36 games with various ailments.
"Like you said, man, there's always something," McFadden said on Monday. "To me it's just like maybe something small, like an ankle or hamstring, turf toe or just something. But you just try to stay positive and just keep working hard and keep moving forward."
McFadden, who is averaging 3.6 yards per carry after averaging a career-low 3.3 yards in 2012, also acknowledged criticism.
"I guess for me, I've dealt with so much criticism for so long I've always just, you just have to turn your face to it," he said. "You can't pay attention to it. You have to stay positive and focus on the task at hand."
In seven games this season, McFadden has 352 rushing yards on 98 attempts this season with four rushing touchdowns in seven games.
"To me, I could have been back last week but I just have to take my time with it," he said. "I know if I rush it back again, this time it will probably be over for the season.
"So I want to just be able to make sure it's all the way back right before I get out there again." But while McFadden is healthy enough to play, receiver Denarius Moore and defensive end Jason Hunter will both miss their second straight games due to injury.
