That is not a job for a hot coordinator with a fancy scheme. It is not gig for a first time head coach to use as OJT. It will require someone savvy enough to recognize all the dimensions of the challenge that confronts him, and the skill and ability to address them all successfully.

It's always set up to fail with Jerry because he has final say on personnel and if not surrounded by men who A) know what they are doing or B) People he will listen to, then the personnel is always going to be an issue.

Second, as long as Jerry keeps hiring low profile coaches and then undermines them like he has done most of the time since the mid 90's then we will continue to be .500 or worse.

Jerry will either have to relinquish some control and hire a solid proven HC or we will have to hope we get lucky with whoever he does hire, or continue with the status quo. With the exception of him hiring BP, most of the last 20 years we've had to just hope we got lucky with the HC hire and not once did that happen. But sadly status quo and blind hope is all we have. I know what status quo will get us so I vote for blind hope.

For starters, Shanahan is 12 years older, and he seems to be winding down. Also, we have enough nepotism with Jerry and his kin. Don't need more of it with a guy who seems to be mostly interested in setting his son up for a career.

I would welcome an actual running game if he were to end up here, tho'.
 
Jerrys wants to show us!!!! So forget about a real HC....We'll get more Garrett's, Wade's and Campo's.

Was Vermeil done when he came back? A good coach is a good coach.

Well Shanahan has only won in one stop whereas Gruden won in both his stops. Gruden won with Brad Johnsen and nearly won with Rich Gannon. Shanahan had an all timer in Elway.

I believe more in Gruden tbh.

An old school, heavy discipline, smash-mouth guy like Vermeil coming back would be nothing like Chucky.

Chucky made his bones as HC and play caller and could give a crap about the running game or defense. Vermeil delegated OC and DC duties while focusing on running the team. He also had a great vision of what his team should look like and did a fantastic job of communicating that vision to the front office everywhere he coached. Age and the lack of defensive talent finally did him in at KC.

Gruden never seemed to have a plan of any kind. He made some great play calls and won a Superbowl with another man's team. Then he kind of hung on for several years until he was fired and has been in broadcasting for five seasons and has shown no passion for returning at all.
 
I'd take Shanahan, but after his experience with Davis I just can't see him coaching for Jerry.
