Who was it that was saying that he is only average in YAC?
 
How is this stat measured? Someone has to know where the ball was caught.
 
I'm more concerned about average YAC than raw number.

Still surprising to me. Thing is, you have to factor in, say, things like the bomb he catches when he's wide open and then runs for another 50 yards like against the Broncos. That's RAC but not entirely what I mean.

When I complain about Dez's RAC being overrated, I mean you don't see him take hitches and slants and break them. At least I can't recall seeing him do it since like his rookie year. I think a lot of his RAC probably comes from catching balls over the middle where there is not a defender within a couple yards of him and then he turns the corner and speeds upfield.

If we're gonna throw short stuff and hope it gets turned into long gains, I'd much rather Harris, who I think operates better in small spaces.

Pretty much. The guy will say anything, then defend it to the death.

Wasn't one of the knocks on Dez early in his career that he wouldn't go down, and risked injury and fumbles? I remember people complaining about that here. Doesn't sound like a guy who goes down easily to me.

Why can't they measure it at the time of the catch? It's not really that hard to see which yard marker the catch is made and which yard marker the tackle is made.

I didn't say he goes down easy, there's a difference. I said he's overrated in terms of the amount that he breaks those tackles (and subsequently, RAC). But yeah, I agree he's always fighting those tackles, and yeah, it was a concern that he stays up and ran the risk of fumbling when it was clear he wasn't going any further.

Terrell Owens could take those little hitches and turn them into huge plays routinely. Owens just had the ability to break those arm tackles or juke a CB and then go off to the races. Bryant rarely does. No one can deny that. If Bryant has a strength it's catch on the run and then outrace a DB to open field.

You're correct. But I don't assume there's a dedicated person who is watching every play to measure the YAC result. I think it also depends on the position of the person observing the play.

You want yards after contact. Don't know they measure that for receivers.
