I've read a few blurbs here and there about how Escobar is doing well finding spots in the middle of the field, although I definitely agree that there was no reason to spend a 2nd round pick on a TE yet again. It's completely ridiculous when you think about how we could have added an interior lineman on either side of the ball there.

Camp observations: Young D shines in scrimmage

OXNARD, Calif. – Sunday’s Blue-White scrimmage was about the younger players and the defense was ahead of the offense.
Of the five drives, the offense had to punt four times. The best drive was the last drive that ended with a Joseph Randle touchdown run to the right. The score was set up by a pass interference penalty on Devin Smith after he got beat by wide receiver Tim Benford.
Defensive linemen Landon Cohen, Monte Taylor and Jerome Long came up with sacks of quarterbacks Alex Tanney and Nick Stephens.
** The prettiest play of the day would not have counted in a real game. WR Eric Rogerscame down with a Hail Mary pass from Tanney in situational work, but before Tanney could get the throw off he would have been sacked by George Selvie.
** CB B.W. Webb came up with a pick-six of QB Kyle Orton on the final two-minute drill for the second teamers. Webb read Orton’s eyes wide to the flat and was able to leap for the pick and head down field untouched.
** CB Sterling Moore came up with a terrific breakup of a corner route from Tanney to TEDante Rosario. Tanney’s pass was in perfect position but as Rosario reached for the ball, Moore ripped the tight end’s hands down for the incompletion.
** Earlier Moore broke up a throw to Benford to set up a 53-yard field goal try by Dan Bailey. After missing a game-winning try earlier, Bailey drilled the 53-yarder. Bailey has missed only two kicks in camp.
** WR Terrance Williams is starting to develop a nice feel for the middle of the field. He andTony Romo were able to connect on a few crossing routes, with a good throw just over the linebackers but underneath the secondary for a first down in two-minute work. Unfortunately for the offense, DeMarcus Ware had a sack of Romo on the net play, forcing a Hail Mary that did not connect.
** Romo was sharp, completing 14 of 19 passes in team and seven on seven drills. He threw touchdown passes to Jason Witten and Miles Austin and went five of seven on one drive that ended in a Bailey game winner.
** WR Dwayne Harris helped prevent a Romo pick by turning into a defensive back on throw to the sideline and knocking the pass away from CB Brandon Carr.
** Rookie S J.J. Wilcox loves to hit. His aggressiveness got him in trouble when he hit Benford too late. Five years ago it might not have been a penalty but it is now. On the next play Wilcox brought it on TE Andre Smith to slow down a screen.

This is exactly right, he isn't a special player. I can understand saying screw need and going with BPA when you are getting a potentially special player or special talent. Escobar just seems like a run of the mill good prospect. Not sure why the hell we couldn't get a run of the mill good prospect at a position we actually need.

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys begin their eighth practice of training camp in overcast conditions. Here are a few things to look for:
The weather: The Cowboys have training camp here in part because of the comfortable weather conditions. But the weather has been overcast with temperatures in the mid- to low 60s for the morning walkthrough practices. In afternoon practices, the temperatures have been in the 70s and there's been some light drizzle once in a while. Defensive tackleJason Hatcher said you have to be careful despite the cool conditions because you can still overheat. Several players, including Dez Bryant and Matt Johnson, took a break due to cramping.
Will Bryant return?: The wide receiver missed the last two days of team drills with a sore hip. Bryant, like Jason Witten and Sean Lee, hates to miss practice. Bryant played catch with Tony Romo off to the side and shagged balls during individual drills during his time off. The Cowboys are being cautious with Bryant heading into their final week of practices before the Hall of Fame game.
Nate Livings update: The staring left guard is just getting his feet wet after returning to practice late last week after recovering from a foot injury. Livings has been inconsistent in his return. Is it rust? Or should the Cowboys consider Kevin Kowalski and David Arkin as the starters for the Hall of Fame game? Ronald Leary is getting close to a return and the front office has been impressed with his progress so far. This is an important week for Livings as he tries to get it together.
Who to watch for today: If you attend the practices here, make sure you watch running back Lance Dunbar. He's surprised the Cowboys with his quickness and ability to catch passes. Dunbar has to improve on his pass blocking, given his size -- at 5-foot-8, he's shorter than most, if not all, defensive linemen and linebackers who try to pressure the pocket. It's easy to talk about DeMarcus Ware because he's been outstanding this camp. But Hatcher has performed just as well. He was all over the field on Sunday with numerous quarterback pressures.

If he can stay healthy you may be right. The problem is he is another player that tends to pick up the injury bug and then disappear for awhile.

OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys guard Ronald Leary returned to the practice fields Monday after missing the majority of last week because of a calf injury.
Leary's return comes at a good time for a Cowboys offensive line that is trying to get healthy as it prepares for the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
Nate Livings returned to practice last week and has struggled at times. Leary was getting first-team snaps when Livings was out with his injury, but Livings' return has pushed him to the third team, at least for now.
The Cowboys have high hopes for the undrafted free agent from Memphis because of his size (6-foot-3, 331 pounds), and there's hope that the quickness he displayed in college can translate to the NFL.
"Ron's issue is he just has to get healthy," coach Jason Garrett said of Leary, who has dealt with a calf injury. "Ron had a really good spring and he was in really good shape leading up to training camp and just a couple of, three days beforehand, he kinda tweaked his calf and he's been out, and you just don't want to rush a guy back because it
"It's still early. We've got the extra preseason game, all of those things, a lot of reps and a lot of football to be played here in the next month. Got to get him healthy ... he's making progress and we'll mix him in there. We'll see how he does."

OXNARD, Calif. – A rough start to training camp? Hey, it happens for a rookie.
Struggling at the start of his routes? That makes it hard for an NFL receiver to succeed.
Baylor’s Terrance Williams, one of the Cowboys’ third-round picks, admits he stumbled out of the blocks during the first couple of days of camp. But those timid practice performances seem like a long time ago now that Williams has flashed his playmaking potential in recent days.
“I was nervous toward the beginning,” said Williams, whom the Cowboys ranked as the No. 23 player in the draft. “But I’m getting better day by day. The goal is not to take a step back but to keep going forward.”
It’s the first few steps of his routes that are the key to Williams making a major impact as a rookie.
There’s no question that the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Williams has the ability to be a deep threat. He led the nation with 1,832 yards as a Baylor senior, averaging 18.9 yards per catch. He’s provided glimpses of his ball skills and ability to get deep during camp.
The challenge for Williams, who should see a ton of single coverage as the Cowboys’ third receiver, is getting off the line of scrimmage against cornerbacks who are stronger, smarter, faster and tougher than the dudes he torched in the Big 12.
“He has an ability to really put pressure on the top of the defense,” receivers coach Derek Dooley said. “It’s what we loved about him at Baylor, just how he could really generate some explosive plays off the field, because he’s explosive off the ball, he’s fast and he’s a good target. When he’s on the move and he’s down the field, he really can apply some pressure, and he’s doing that out here.
“What he’s got to work on is what every rookie has to work on. Those first five yards are really difficult at this level against great corners, so learning how to beat press and then learning how to do it over and over again, that’s probably the biggest challenge for these young guys.”
If Williams can master beating press, opposing corners might be the nervous ones.

Gotcha: Jason Garrett plays a joke on reporters during his daily press conference
Jason Garrett played a joke on the reporters in his daily press conference Monday.
He was asked at what point in the week the team will start deciding on playing time for the Hall of Fame Game. Garrett, notoriously reluctant to reveal anything he doesn’t have to, had everyone’s attention when he began his answer like this: “We had those conversations two weeks ago, and we outlined everybody’s playing status. We made that public.”
He stopped. Silence hung in the air.
He curled his finger, put it near his mouth and made a motion like a fish caught on a hook.
He couldn't hold back his smile. He had “hooked” the media, which should have remembered from just days earlier with the Tony Romo questions that he had said the staff hadn’t had any meetings about that yet.
He laughed as knowing smiles spread.
“You guys were locked into that answer,” he said.
And then, just to properly answer the question, he said, “We will have those conversations later this week.”

Scout’s Notebook: New DE Turning Heads; Ready To Watch Leary

OXNARD, Calif. - Some quick thoughts from the practice field in Oxnard:
•Ronald Leary returned to practice today and was working his way back into the mix running with the second line but as the third guard. My gut tells me that Leary might spend today working his way back in but don't look for it to take long for him to compete for the starting job. He has a lot of fans on this staff.
•Speaking of the staff, defensive end George Selvie fresh off the street has turned some heads in these practices with his work off the edge. The front office was not interested in adding a high dollar pickup to the mix while Anthony Spencer was recovering and with the addition of Selvie and the shifting of Ben Bass, they feel much better about the situation there.
•Rookie linebacker DeVonte Holloman is a much better defender against the pass than he showed on tape at South Carolina. He has shown athletic ability and awareness when placed in coverage situations.
•With Barry Church out of the lineup with a tooth that was giving him trouble, rookie safety J.J. Wilcox took his place during the walk through and will most likely do so the next several days. It was interesting that the coaches went with him over Matt Johnson but that seems to be how these coaches as a group are using these rookies. We have seen it at two other spots, center and third receiver. It appears that this rookie class is going to contribute right off the bat.
•Despite being the fourth running back on the depth chart right now, look for Joseph Randle to continue to get plenty of work these next five weeks according to Jason Garrett. What I have liked about his game so far is that he is not afraid of the physical side of the game. When he has been asked to step up and block, he has not been one bit shy. That is very important.
•A name you haven't heard in while is that of tackle Demetress Bell but in visiting with some members of the front office, there really is a plan for him. They knew he was in poor physical condition but they also feel like as a veteran tackle that he could get himself right physically here in the next couple of weeks then when they need him for these preseason games that he would be ready to go. The hope is to try and get him back to the form he showed in Buffalo. Edwan Coughman and Darrion Weems have been taking the majority of the reps at tackle while Jermey Parnell has been out as well. Offensive and defensive linemen are tough to find in this time of the year so taking a chance on Bell who has experience is worth the shot at this point

Have been impressed with what I have seen from Gavin Escobar since he has taken over the role as the second tight end for James Hanna in this “12” personnel package. Escobar has done a solid job in his route running in regards to clearing space to create routes behind him but also managing to work himself when he has been the primary receiver in the route. He has shown dependable hands underneath but down the field as well. He took a big hit from Barry Church during practice on Tuesday in the 7-on-7 period and managed to secure the ball.
His hands have been outstanding and his blocking on the move has been good. Where he will need to get better is learning how to position his hands inside, not to allow any separation with the defender. The really good tight ends in this league know how to hold and that is something that he will pick up. What might be Escobar’s best trait at this moment is that the game has not looked too big for him. He has look comfortable and for a rookie with a ton on his plate, that is at times difficult to do.

Injury report: No worries about Dez Bryant's absence

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys' eighth practice of training camp didn't have wide receiver Dez Bryant for the third consecutive day with a sore hip.
The injury isn't considered serious given how Bryant worked individual drills on Sunday but didn't participate in the team portions of practice. Bryant brought his helmet to practice and played catch with whomever was available.
After practice, he spent a good 10 minutes playing catch with Brett Bech, the Cowboys' assistant strength and conditioning coach.
"That could be a good thing for someone like Dez and Miles (Austin), who run a lot," quarterback Tony Romo said about Bryant's absence from practice due to health reasons. "We put a big emphasis on running and really running a lot more than most teams do at the wide receiver position. Both guys do it and push themselves every single day, it's not easy. I think it can be a good thing for them to get their legs back for a day or two and then they can push it again. In Dez's case I think he has some soreness, it will be a couple of days thing, so I think he'll be fine."

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys' eighth practice of training camp didn't have wide receiver Dez Bryant for the third consecutive day with a sore hip.
The injury isn't considered serious given how Bryant worked individual drills on Sunday but didn't participate in the team portions of practice. Bryant brought his helmet to practice and played catch with whomever was available.
After practice, he spent a good 10 minutes playing catch with Brett Bech, the Cowboys' assistant strength and conditioning coach.
"That could be a good thing for someone like Dez and Miles (Austin), who run a lot," quarterback Tony Romo said about Bryant's absence from practice due to health reasons. "We put a big emphasis on running and really running a lot more than most teams do at the wide receiver position. Both guys do it and push themselves every single day, it's not easy. I think it can be a good thing for them to get their legs back for a day or two and then they can push it again. In Dez's case I think he has some soreness, it will be a couple of days thing, so I think he'll be fine."
