Teammate tweets that Clowney ran a 4.46

While one prominent SEC star is adding questions to his future NFL draft stock, another is adding chapters to an already sizable legend.

Via the Sporting News, a teammate of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds.

Running back Mike Davis initially wrote “Think Clowney ran a 4.46,” but has apparently since deleted the tweet. The Gamecocks just finished summer workouts, which included 40 testing.

While it seems outlandish to think the 6-foot-6, 274 pound Clowney could run such a time, he’s been stunning people with his physical gifts for some time.
His hit on Michigan running back Vincent Smith in last year’s Outback Bowl might be one of the best plays I’ve ever seen, and it’s possible that Smith’s helmet did a 4.2 on its way off Smith’s head that day.

Clowney’s a decent bet to be the top pick in next year’s draft. He would have likely been the top pick this year if he had been allowed to enter.

And that would be true even if he ran a 4.6 at his size, which makes this latest time extraneous, even if apocryphal.

I don't throw this term around much, but...FREAK.

Whatever team gets the top pick would be stupid to pass on him for anyone.

Best non-QB prospect since Calvin Johnson. Leading up to that draft I said Johnson's ceiling was the GOAT WR, Clowney's ceiling is the GOAT DE.

I'll go on record and say that I'd give up every pick we have in 2014 to draft that man.

i would give the Julio Jones/RG3 treatment to get this guy. 3 first round picks and not even think about it. This guy has the potential to change games right from the get go in a pressing area for us as soon as Spencer leaves in free agency

It's going to suck when he gets buried in some football blackhole like Jacksonville or Buffalo.

I don't know if I could advocate that for a non-QB.

There are definite questions to mull over. Let's say Clowney gives you a little better production than say we're getting from Ware -- maybe low 20's in sacks every year. Is that worth the ransom it would take to move up and get him? As great as he might be it's still not franchise QB type impact. He would be hard for me to pass up even I had to overpay, but I can easily see good reasons not to go too crazy trying to maneuver up to the top pick.

If all it took right now was my one and Ware for him, I would take it. That's a no brainer.

I'd even throw in a few picks to make it look nice.

Absolutely. Multiple first rounders might be too much, but Ware, a one, and change would be a great deal for a once in a decade athletic freak like Clowney.

I remember countering your argument that Johnson was the most dominant player in the draft by saying that Adrian Peterson would be the superior player.

Right now I'd say it's a toss up.

Yea it's a tossup but they're both HOF players and I stand by that comment about his ceiling being the GOAT WR.

The fact that teams are passing the ball more certainly helps your argument. He's a superior talent playing in a one dimensional offense with a pretty good QB.

He should end up with numbers around Moss and TO territory. I don't think he touches Rice's numbers. That bar is too high, IMO.

I never really expected him to be the GOAT, just that that was his ceiling. And those rice numbers will probably never be broken considering he played until he was about 40.

Ok, no. I don't think he'll bust.

Just trying to balance out the "low 20 sacks EVERY year" stuff.

Holy Christ.

That probably is a little on the hyperbole side isn't it? Let me amend my remarks and speculate that he becomes a consistent high teens sack guy -- comparable to Ware's production but maybe a little higher if he truly lives up to all that potential.
