Cowboys Sign Veteran TE Dante Rosario--Updated

Hey gang, no sweat.

If there's one thing the owner knows, it's that you need to find one well-equipped position and continually throw resources at it.

He's been doing this for 20+ years, so why not leave the job to the professionals?

Dante Rosario isn't just a camp body

IRVING, Texas -- What does the signing of veteran Dante Rosario mean for the Cowboys?

Listen This is not a camp body just to get through a couple of days. If the Cowboys wanted one of those, then they could have added some unknown face as the 90th guy on a 90-man roster or they just could have kept Paul Freedman, who was cut in favor of Rosario.

Rosario is more like James Hanna and second-rounder Gavin Escobar than he is Jason Witten. One scout described Rosario’s blocking as “serviceable.” He has some skill. He is big enough. He can also play special teams. (championship) He had four tackles in San Diego for the Cowboys’ new special teams coach, Rich Bisaccia.

Even after taking Escobar in the second round, the Cowboys have kept the search for another tight end alive. They missed out on a waiver claim on Mickey Shuler Jr. and now they have added Rosario.

Are they down on Escobar? It’s way too early for that. Are they down on Hanna? He’s done a nice job in the offseason and has maintained his No. 2 role in organized team activities.

The Cowboys are clearly marrying themselves to “12 personnel” with how they have looked at the position.

If anything it continues to spell the end for a traditional fullback on the 53-man roster. Lawrence Vickers is recovering from back surgery and has been unable to practice in the offseason. When he is healthy, he will have to show he’s worth keeping.

Whoa.

Four whole tackles. That's like...awesome.

BTW...he is a camp body unless we are willing to carry four TEs and cut Vickers.
 
I think Vickers is gone...problem is that we don't have a TE who can line up as a FB like we did with Phillips.

On Monday, I went into the film room and took a look at some of the work of newly-signed tight end Dante Rosario, who replaces Paul Freedman, who was placed on waivers.

Games Viewed: Oakland, Tennessee, Atlanta, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Kansas City

Strengths: Is smooth up the field….really moves well for a player of his size….can get in and out of his breaks…can redirect and find space…will get his head around quickly for the ball…was a problem for the Titans in the red zone, once on a crossing route and the other, vertical against the linebacker….can get separation…stick nod…can make the high adjust for the ball in the air (Oakland)…dependable hands….will catch the ball behind him…only observed one clear drop when he tried to body catch…is used on several different route combinations…can work inside between the hashes or outside the numbers…has lined up all over the formation…used as a wide receiver, flex tight end on the front side and wing on the backside….will line up at times as the inline “Y” but more times than not he is off the ball…knows how to push off…has the movement skills to be a zone blocker….feet and his athletic movements are good…not slow footed…will stay in for pass pro and was not beaten for any pressures…

Weakness:Thought he could have done a better job of finishing his blocks…is not the type of blocker that is going to hammer you off the ball one-on-one and get movement…wasn’t as strong as he needed on the backside cutoff…will catch and work for control with his hands and upper body…tries to keep his feet moving to get push…doesn’t always extend on the defender….tends to try and work his hands inside….blocks the defender very
close….will get overextended when he gets in space…this is when you see him struggle with his balance…you see this more when he tries to pass block…wide base…will try and turn his man out at the point of attack and position block…tries to work his man out of the hole with his hands and feet….seemed to show better effort when he knew the ball was going behind him…
 
It's not like they are proclaiming this to be a huge signing. This is just churn. Patriots and Steelers usually keep four TE's, counting any fullbacks.

Dallas clearly plans to keep Witten, Escobar, Hannah, and whoever emerges from Rosario, Vickers, and the street guys.

But where is the urgency to churn on the OL? DL?

Kevin Boss and Randy McMichael are out there, so there is some hope.

They are stubbornly overestimating both their talent and the value of keeping continuity within the scheme.

They stupidly believe Arkin, Kowalski, Costa, etc. are somehow great and for some reason only need time in Callahan's system to show off this unbelievable talent. In their minds anyone they might add to the "churn" only slows Arkin, et al's rise to greatness.

I think this is why they only added one OL in the draft. They really are "snickering" to themselves.
