Cowboys 2013 Draft Board Posted?

Problem is we don't rank enough guys. When you eliminate half the draft, suddenly second rounders are in the 20s, and so forth.

Bingo. There is no reason that so many should be simply removed from our boards. I am quite certain they removed players who will go on to have productive careers and could have had productive careers here.

Meaning it's simple misevaluation on our part.

We do this every year, by the way. Put forth a board with like half the names it should have on it.

No wonder we suck at drafting. For some reason we are eliminating half the players.

If they ranked Pugh 21 and Frederick 22, why trade all the way down to 31 to get either? Why not draft them right there at 18? According to this genius board, they would have risked losing the Last of the Mohicans by dropping 13 slots.

No, they knew Frederick would be there, so the 22 ranking is BS.

Because even though Frederick is their "22nd" ranked player, he's technically got a second round grade.

We had a huge argument about this subject back in the day (not necessarily me and you, I mean "me and the rest of the board"). Something about the Cowboys only assigning first round grades to 18 players or something, to which I responded, well, that's retarded, they should just rank their top 32 players and then ALL those players should be first rounders. Because conceivably if you are picking 32, the first 31 players on your board could be gone. In theory.

Instead, the Cowboys apply an arbitrary standard of how good a "first round pick" should be and then they are only willing to select players they think are that good in the first round. The problem is that the quality of the draft changes yearly and therefore some first rounds are going to have weaker players in them that might not live up to that standard every year. It doesn't mean you should lose your minds like the Cowboys always seem to do at the end of the round.

Maybe this is why we can't draft at the back of a round. Our drafts are only good when we are picking at the top. All our favorites go early in rounds and we are generally left scrambling for leftovers or players we have rated out of line with the rest of the league.

It just doesn't make any sense to remove so many players like they do. I mean, I understand that their logic is "these players don't fit us for some reason" but I think they are very clearly leaving out way too many players they are simply wrong about.

What scares me if this is true is how we didn't stick to the board. We had Floyd rated ahead of Frederick. Williams rated ahead of Escobar. Webb rated ahead of Wilcox. Magee ahead of Holloman. WTF

We know the story there. This was a need draft too. We needed the center (as a promise to Romo), whereas "DL is a strength." So it was a no-brainer when Jerry determined that Floyd, while highly ranked, was the gap plugger DT in our system and not the "quick twitch" guy who would accumulate the stats (read: boring).

Safety was a need more than corner. Enter Wilcox.

And sadly, Garrett I am sure told everyone that second TE was a need.

According to this draft board, if true, we had Floyd as our #5 player in the draft and passed on him at #18?

Also, Terrence Williams was ranked #23 on our board and Jerruh didn't try to trade up for him? Can you imagine Jerruh sitting in his chair cool, calm and collected to patiently wait for his #23rd ranked prospect drop to #74?

Doubt it.

Again, just because we had Williams as our #23rd player doesn't mean we thought he deserved to be taken at 23.

It's moronic, but yeah, we only have 15-20 guys per "tier" sometimes. And there are only 5 tiers above.

We have like 120 total players on our board, yet 250 get drafted. It's no wonder we make head scratching decisions to pass on quality guys. We have way too many who are simply off our board.

I agree, it's like we look at Kipers board and say half the guys in his top 32 we don't like. So instead of just knocking the ones we don't like down the board further we just remove them all together like we just know they won't be available.

It's like me before the draft listing my favorite players for our picks in every round and then only ranking them on my draft board and not ranking any of the other players. It's why I am really starting to believe that we need to just gut most of the scouting department and have a knew scouting director that didn't grow up in the Cowboys scouting department. Problem is Jerry would probably just give the position to a relative who learned everything he knows about scouting from working with the current scouting department.

Terrance Williams is #23 and Frederick is #22.

I doubt Frederick was rated a 1st round talent and the next highest prospect on their board was a '3rd/4th rounder'....Especially since they drafted Escobar in the 2nd.

Weird that the #5 guy on our board was a bad fit for our defense.

Weird that the #5 guy on our board was a bad fit for our defense.

Don't you get it? Our #5 ranked guy was probably rated as a mid-1st rounder.

17 spots lower, Frederick at #22 was ranked as a lower 1st rounder but then #23 Williams was ranked around a 3rd/4th rounder and #25 Escobar was rated a 2nd rounder.

Yeah a lot of this simply doesn't make much sense.

Which of course means this definitely was our board.

That was reported a couple of places, but we took the risk of taking Holloman over Magee because we gambled with Magees injuries and lack of size, he'd be available later.

What I find comical (or scary) is I remember someone (Jerry/Stephen/Jason who knows) saying after the draft we were torn who to take with our first third rounder between Williams and Wilcox. They (front office) were debating who had the better chance to fall to their 2nd third rounder of the two.

But according to the above board... Williams was rated 22nd on our board and Wilcox was rated 49th.

Why in the hell was there any discussion in that case???

The more I look at that board, I think it's BS.

So fucking sad that this is true.

We were elevating based on need. We needed a safety. It's why trading down for our 22nd player trumped taking our 5th player too.

Oh. So back up TE was evaluated as more of a need than safety?

[h=1]Dallas Cowboys 2013 Draft Board Leaked: All Seven Rounds![/h]By rabblerousron May 30 2013, 1:00p

In the week following the 2010 draft, a bunch of intrepid BTB readers captured screen shots from video taken inside the Cowboys war room and brilliantly constructed an almost complete version of the team's 2010 draft board. Well, I'm pleased to announce that, thanks to a similar set of images taken in the team's war room during day one of the 2013 draft (see below), we have reconstructed the team's 2013 board.

In this and other photos, you can see the board in the background with the players' names aligned on it. Behind Jerry, you can see the players ranked by round. To his right (our left) hung a whiteboard with the various positions broken down by round. By careful examination of these images, I was able to reconstruct the position-by-round board:

A few attendant thoughts:

Number of players
: We had heard before the draft that the Cowboys wanted to include only players on the board that they were sure they wanted, so they were working to develop a leaner, more "pure" board. This board has 132 players on it, which is actually pretty close to the one that leaked in 2010, which had 129 players.

Deep draft: We heard time and again that this was a deep draft, particularly in the second and third rounds. While Dallas' second round isn't overly populated, the third round is rich (and, somewhat surprisingly, so is the fifth).

Late rounds: It appears the team didn't feel there were many players deserving of sixth and seventh round designations. This makes sense, if we consider that they are trying to draft only players who have a legit chance to make the club. There are, however, a lot of guys on whom they are willing to take a chance: a bevy of names populate the "priority free agent" designations at the bottom of each position column.

Players not on the board: It looks like there are several categories of player not on the Cowboys board:

1. Injury or character scratches: First rounders Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree and Matt Elam aren't on Dallas board. Neither are RB Christine Michael, WRs Keenan Allen and Robert Woods, CBs Tyrann Matthieu and Therold Simon, or DE Sam Montgomery. Clearly, its still important that the players they draft are "RKGs." Further, the team seems to be moving away form selecting talented yet injury-prone players. Several guys with injury histories - Marcus Lattimore, or the aforementioned Jones, for example - are nowhere to be found.

2. Bad scheme fits
. You'll notice that three big defensive tackles who received a lot of ink before the draft as possible fits at the one technique - Johnathan Hankins, John Jenkins and Montori Hughes - are not on the Cowboys board. Jesse WIlliams? Nope. As the guys who were on the board suggest, Kiffin and Co. wanted defensive tackles in the 300 pound range who offer quickness and penetration more so than the ability to stand up two rival O-linemen.

3. Wrong size, Charlie: Similarly, they tended to downgrade short receivers (Marquise Goodwin received a sixth round grade; Ace Sanders was nowhere to be found) and small corners (B.W. Webb appears to be a notable exception). It's rare to find a safety on their board under six feet in height. On the other hand, all the linebackers on the board are quick, undersized guys; all the big Parcellsian run stuffers were on other teams' boards.

Differences of opinion
: Not only did Dallas eschew some highly-drafted players for the above offenses, they had several guys ranked considerably lower than where they were drafted. They had a second-round grade on D. J. Hayden, who the Raiders reportedly were prepared to take with the third overall pick; in addition, they had third round grades on Desmond Trufant (taken 22nd overall), Datone Jones (26th), and Kyle Long (20th). The most egregious differences? QB E.J. Manuel, drafted 16th, had a fourth round grade, and CB Johnthan Banks, who the Buccaneers nabbed at #43, was given a sixth round designation.

Ranking them regardless of position: Thanks to a sliding whiteboard covering rounds six and seven, I only have the first five rounds of the position rankings that you can see behind Jerry in the above picture. Given that they only had a handful of players with sixth and seventh round grades, it's probably not a big deal. Here's what rounds one through five look like:

[/TABLE]

From this, we can ascertain the Cowboys draft, according to their board:
Travis Frederick [2, 22]
Gavin Escobar [2, 25]
Terrance WIlliams [2, 23]
J. J. Wilcox [3, 50]
B. W. Webb [3, 47]
Joseph Randle [3, 67]
DeVonte Holloman [5, 147]

As this suggests, Dallas didn't follow a pure "BPA" strategy, even after their trade back with the 49ers. But they were pretty close to one.

Here is what their draft would have looked like had they followed a pure "BPA" strategy (I've included options other than Matt Barkley at #80, given that the Cowboys would have just drafted Nassib):

31 Travis Frederick [2, 22]
47 Terrance Williams [2, 23]
74 Ryan Nassib [2, 28]
80 Matt Barkley [2, 31] or Kenny Wheaton [3, 44] or B. W. Webb [3, 47]
114 Webb or J. J. Wilcox [3, 50]
151 Everett Dawkins [3, 62]
185 D.C. Jefferson [3, 63]

It's clear that they didn't want to draft a quarterback and did want to draft a running back - hence passing on both Nassib and Barkley, and opting for Randle (who, to be fair, was the next player on the board after Dawkins and Jefferson).

It is clear we are definitely corner whores and OL adverse. Just look at how many damn CBs were on our puny condensed draft board.
