Can't find fault with that logic except Ken Norton was slow to develop. Landry considered him too stupid in terms of football intelligence to play MLB in his defense. (Landry's scheme required the MLB to be the defensive QB and have the most complex reads).

I'm not. First round picks are where you are trying to find elite. Like Frederick is an elite center. Martin is an elite guard.

I know it's at the end of the first round. But I'm not settling for above average.

no one thought Frederick was elite on draft day, no one even thought he was a first rounder. He was exactly a for need reach.
 
I call all of the bullshit. Everyone, everyone, everyone including Frederick himself thought he was a little bit of a reach in the first round. There had been a historic run on linemen and we did the right thing by drafting Frederick but nobody saw him as BPA.
 
Frederick was my ideal choice at 47, 16 spots made no difference to me. I didn't think he was a can't miss Pouncey level prospect but I thought he could definitely solidify the center spot for 8-10 years with possibly a few Pro Bowls mixed in.
 
I went back and looked at the early draft fallout, you and and CRock were both really positive on him. Props.
 
I had no opinion on Federick in the first. He slipped right past my radar and I had to read up on him after we drafted him.
 
I didn't think Frederick was an elite mid first round talent, I had him as an early second. I would have considered getting him at 47 a steal and an "A" pick in the second.

Getting him at the end of the first was fine since it was clear the team did their homework but it was an unexpected first round selection to say the least, which can only mean he didn't have a consensus first round grade prior to that point.

Same situation with a guy like Logan Mankins though. Was not a first round pick on most publications, probably in part due to undervaluing him for his position, Pats identified an undervalued asset and struck gold.

Same thing with Frederick and the team should be commended but I don't want to go so far as to say I know before the draft that Frederick was gonna be a player we should be wanting at 27.

Point is you're not shooting for a long term average starter in the first round. That's silly. You want elite talent with a first round pick. Generally you're looking for a franchise type player.

You're shooting for the best player you can get. Sometimes, like this year, lt may not be possible to get an elite player at 27.

Wrong. You might not get what you call an elite prospect, but there will be an elite player their at 27. I can promise you that someone who goes in this draft after pick 27 will be an elite player in the NFL. You just need to scout them right.

I think he meant elite as far as anyone could possibly tell pre-draft.

Basically, Dallas' pre-draft 15-20 "first rounders" will be gone by 27.

I'm sure I could look back and find a draft somewhere where no elite players were drafted within a round or two after the 27th pick.

Sure there might be a Tom Brady taken in the 6th round but I don't count that.
 
I think even Dallas was selling Frederick as more of a "solid" type of pick. Solid makes sense some times. Obviously if you can choose between Greg Ellis and Randy Moss you go elite over solid every time. But certain positions (such as QB and OT) are so few and far between with an elite prospect (though Smith was) you get a solid one in the first round because that's usually the only place you can find them.

Of course not. If the Pats had properly scouted Brady, they would have taken him in Round 1.

Not me, but I got lambasted for thinking a "4th round" C was a good pick there.

I thought he was a great pick because he not only had the physical attributes, but he was smart (chem engineering major).

You want smart and strong in your center that will be making your line calls. And he was known for his motor and getting to the 2nd level.

I thought he was VERY well rounded.
