Sabin: Cowboys seek 'right number' for Murray; but what goes into their decision?

Use your words Jerry.

There is a distinct difference between the way they are referring to Murray versus Bryant.

Obviously one is in the get-a-long gang and one is not.

I luv Dez, but let's not forget he's not exactly MENSA material, on the other hand Murray seems pretty sharp, so I think it's easier to "negotiate" with Demarco.

Dez seems to be getting some weird advice. If he hasn't already Irvin should reach out to him. At first it seemed like normal negotiation posturing, but hearing that his agents haven't even talked to the Cowboys is troubling. There is not negotiation with communication.

I'd go for 5/25, assuming guarantees not over 7.5 mil. That's about half of what we gave Marion Barber (7/45 16 guaranteed)

There is no way he is signing for anything under 10 mill guaranteed nor should he.

The Salary cap is jumping up over the next 3 years so that lessens the blow moving forward, if we can get at 5/25 12 mill guranteed I am all over that.

5/25 at 10 mill guaranteed sounds about right.

Everyone keeps talking about how the guy is only going to decline from here. Well, no shit the guy may not hit 1,800 again but I don't think that means he's immediately destined to decline, per se.

I think the guy has at least 3 very good years in him and that's all I really want. Shit, I'd actually be happy with 2 years of elite play left because I think that's about as long as we can realistically expect Romo to continue to play at a high level.

Callahan's comments were very telling. The team was less concerned about piling up yards than number of carries. This is very good news and what "some" of us have been trying to point out for years now. This was part of Parcells' core philosophy too. Run. Even if it isn't working. We did that this year finally, and it represents an important organizational shift. Good to hear one of the coaches verify that this was indeed the thought process.

So, consider all things equal, 5/25 with 10 million guaranteed. Murray or Peterson?

Its a hard decision for me, but I think I would have to stick with Murray. Peterson will be 30 in less than a month. Even with as good as he has been I couldn't give him that contract. The decline happens too fast. Murray on the other hand just turned 27 and could have 3 or 4 more very solid years left.

I'd stick with Murray as well...the continuity of it would make quite a bit of sense. He does a great job in protection and catching balls out of the backfield too. The fan in me though kind of geeks out about watching Peterson behind this line and in this offense.

No way in hell I'd give Peterson a 5 year contract at his age.

I think the appeal of Peterson is you could get away with giving him a 3 or maybe even two year deal.

He would never sign a two year deal.

Like I said, I'd go to 3. Anything more, he can pound sand. As it is, that third year is high risk for a 30 year old running back. I would feel more comfortable giving it to Murray.

If Murray would cut out the damn fumbles, then this wouldn't even be a debate for me - it would be Murray all the way.

I think he is the most well rounded RB in football and he's got plenty of elite football left in him.

While I was pissed at that fumble in Green Bay, I've gotten past it a bit now but I haven't and won't forget. That's the only reason I'm even entertaining the idea of getting AP.

AP fumbles more than Murray.

AP fumbles more than Murray.

He's not the most sure-handed guy in the world, but he's no worse than Murray and if he played his best football, it trumps everyone else's best football so the reward would at least be higher.

With a signing bonus of 10 million the length of the contract really does not matter Thats very little dead money moving forward.

My only issue with Peterson is he as good in pass pro as Murray, after what he did with that knee injury I can easily see him being a productive back for 5 more years.

Yeah this is how I feel.

That's exactly right. The signing bonus is what matters. After that the length of the contract is just a way to spread the signing bonus out further to create additional cap space now in exchange for a loss of cap space in the future.

Glad the Cowboys are going to let Murray test free agency.

I'm still bitter about his costly fumble against GB.

No sense breaking the bank on a RB who can't take care of the ball.
