Secondary Coach: "We've All Got a Point to Prove"

The Cowboys finished dead last in the league in defense last season

Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson knows his unit had a miserable year in 2013. He knows his players know it, too.

So it’s no surprise that Henderson and his players are entering 2014 with a sizable chip on their collective shoulder.

“I think we’ve all got a point to prove,” Henderson told the team’s official website. “You know, last year wasn’t a good year for us on defense statistically, so we all have a point to prove and we’ve got to come out every day and prove it to ourselves first, so opening day we can go out and have better results than last year.”

Of course, Henderson saying last year was not a good year is a big understatement. Not only did the Cowboys finish dead last in defense last year, 2013 marks the worst statistical season in the 54-year history of the franchise.

That’s a tough pill to swallow, but Henderson says the defense is using the ugly memories of last year as motivation.

“Nobody wants to look at last year and take ownership of that, but we have to,” he said. “We’ve got to get better from there and we cannot let that happen again.”

We already have Carr and Claiborne on record. Talking. A lot.

Eff them.

There is a lot of false bravado and next to no evidence of actual change. The sensitive bitch factor is high with this group and there's always some kind of excuse. At least Terence Newman had makeup speed to go with all of the above.

The false bravado is taught in this situation. Jerry just can't help himself, either.

A lot of the false bravado comes from guys getting paid but underperforming if you notice.

It has been a trend over the years.

Jerry Jones' mission statement.

Dysfunction and bullshit start at the top.

They just have to compete. Competitors compete at the competing time.

“We’ve got to get better from there and we cannot let that happen again.”

I've heard this a lot the last 10 or so years.

It just doesn't hold weight anymore.

These guys couldn't handle reading the criticism in this thread, small as it is. The psyche of this secondary is as fragile as glass. Brandon Carr just forgetting how to play under the weight of his contract, Mo Claiborne unable to get physically tougher like a pro needs to, Black Wiener busting in his first year, Matt Johnson's exploding hammys, and JJ Wilcox completely tuning out of football after his mother passed away.

Orlando Scandrick is the only bright spot, and it seems the kid has finally grown up and also stepped up his level of play.
