Leary and Bernadeau were not better than average.

Which is why it was so clearly a priority on draft day.

In fact down the stretch Leary was outright not good, sadly, because I hoped he would get better as the season went on and the opposite happened.

The run blocking was excellent...your coach did not know how to properly use them. The Packers in particular pointed out how good the blocking was and did not understand why they got away from the run game.

This is not a thread about Garrett at all.

I'm also not saying that the OL as a whole "wasn't good enough to run the ball more."

Just that those two guys in particular were not great. And they weren't. Which is why they were in line to be replaced by Trai Turner in the third round.

If Leary and Bernadeau are starting again I'd suspect it would be back to average to below average at those two spots, like it was last year.

That's possible, I do remember reading that Dallas thought he was a better guard than tackle prior to the draft

I think he will make a better RT then guard. Especially since he has been a tackle most his career.

Just because you say something doesn't make it so. I disagree with your assessment.

If the line was used properly, more run plays called, they would have even been more effective. That was on Garrett...so this is not a thread about him, but he was the weak link on the line.

Also...who gives a fuck if they addressed it in the draft. For years you have been screaming for them to more proactive and less reactive...they were, and you use that as some kind of ammo for your point. Good one.

Good. Hopefully Free is competent enough to where we can look at the position later in the draft.

We're not talking about the line in general, which did have a very good season, largely on the backs of a dominant Tyron Smith, a revelation at center in Frederick, and a Free who bounced back and was not a liability anymore.

The guards? They were ok. They were not great. They weren't even above average.

They were average. And actually by the end of the season Leary was struggling (his game against Washington was abysmal).

That's ok. You can get an OL to play well even with two guys on it that weren't above average.

Which was the case last year with us.

That was on Garrett...so this is not a thread about him, but he was the weak link on the line.

Garrett is not resposible for Mackenzie Bernadeau only having the talent to be what he currently is, which is a decent starter at best. Any coach in the league is not going to get more out of that player, he's just a guy and one who is better situated for being the interior backup at all three spots.

Which is what we were trying to do with him when we were working the phones to move up for Turner.
 
We were being proactive and going after a player we had high up on our board. It is not a shot at the players in place.

Anyways, your boy fucked up and did not use a strength of the team...which was the OL.

I like how only Smith, Fred, and Free get props. :lol

Free is due for $11 million next season, I thought I heard. And he's gonna be 31, right?

And he's not a special player.

He'll have to take another sizeable contract restructure to even have a chance to be on the roster next year, is my guess.

Don't be absurd. If we had long term "excellent" guards in place, we wouldn't be drafting third round replacements. I know it, you know it, we all know it.

The team wasn't be proactive any more than it was being proactive by trading up for Lawrence, another desperate position of need.

Those were the three best players on the line, so.... yeah.

Leary and Bernadeau were not Phil Costa or Bill Nagy bad, but Waters was the best player to play guard for us last season. And he was ancient.

He's not due that. It's his cap hit. Release or otherwise.
