The
Dallas Cowboys are still keeping Florida State defensive tackle
Timmy Jernigan on their draft board, at least for now, according to multiple sources despite a positive drug test because of a diluted urine sample.
Fox Sports reported Jernigan tested positive at the scouting combine in February along with several other players, including LSU defensive tackle
Anthony Johnson and Florida State linebackers
Telvin Smith and
Christian Jones.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter confirmed LSU quarterback
Zach Mettenberger also tested positive for a
diluted urine sample.
Normally, the Cowboys will take a player off their draft board for a positive drug test.
Jernigan is projected as a low-first round to high-to-middle second-round pick. He was one of 30 prospective players to visit Valley Ranch as part of the Cowboys’ allotment of national visits.
The Cowboys do like his ability to take on double teams and pressure the pocket, but with new defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, the team doesn’t put a high regard on 1-technique players.
Last month, in a radio interview on 105.3 The Fan Dallas/Fort Worth, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Jernigan was a great football player, however, “if a player’s ceiling may be a 1-technique, it may be hard for him to make our first round."
Jernigan’s agent, Sunny Shah, didn’t return a call seeking comment on Jernigan’s failed test.
