If Sutton can play the 1 technique and is the BPA, I have zero problems with having three quality DTs. At that point, you are burning a third round pick on a third DT, not a first rounder (because you don't pass on Donald thinking you can get Sutton later).

If there is a player who has the ability to become a starter at a different position and is of equal value, we should look there as well. Otherwise, we'll have a guy with talent who will never play and still have a hole somewhere else.

And if Melton blows his knee out again, not only are we stuck with Hayden starting again but it also means looking for a DT again next April since Melton's option won't be picked up.

It's not like he would be drafted and put on the bench. DT's would rotate fairly often.

Exactly. And even if Melton stays healthy and plays all year, you'd still have the option of letting him go instead of paying the huge pay hike he'd have coming to him. Two young and cheap DTs that can play sound pretty good to me.

People complain all the time about this team not using any foresight. Not covering their asses. Well, this scenario would be doing exactly that, yet we have somebody telling us it would be stupid.

With a third round pick you're hoping for a long term starter, not an immediate starter. In fact it's pretty rare to find an immediate starting talent in the third round. It happens obviously (Williams last year) but in general that's not really your aim with a third round pick. Instead you're just looking for anyone with starting talent and you let the roster shake out in the long term. If the guy rotates for a year but starts for the next 9 I call it a win.

Well of course need can be a tie breaker, but if you really like Sutton (and Mel here does), then there's not much chance he's not the clear BPA at that time.

Who do you like better on the board at that spot? Deonne Bucannon? Kelcy Quarles? Carl Bradford?

I think a guy like Quarles, despite being a DE, is a full step down from Sutton, if Sutton is the player he was for most of his college career. In fact I'm not sure Quarles starts over Crawford or Selvie, despite being at one of these so-called "need" positions.

Cause I had a brain fart after seeing Mel list him as a DE in the OP. I was skimming for DEs.

But I knew he was a DT, just forgot.

And actually I think he is an excellent three technique prospect. You can't argue with his production and body size. The only concern I really have is how much of his production was a result of playing on the same D-line and Clowney.

Me too. Neither pick would be bad, but Barr would probably be my pick, using need as a tie breaker.

Barr is an impressive physical talent. I just think he has a ton of work to be done to transition from OLB to DE. More than I think we can afford.

Donald is plug and play, no assembly required.

We'd be fortunate to have a shot at one, let alone have to choose.
