Would totally agree with this. You use FA to find backups/rotational players/stop gaps (also called bridge players). You use them to get you through till you can draft a future starter at that position.

You aren't looking for starters (1st teamers) here. You are looking for guys that can contribute wherever.

Yes. It would be production that you are paying for and it would be worth it. When the production stops and the money is still expected, that's when you have to make a decision.

Free agency can be used to find starters. That way you can enter the draft with a clean perspective.

But, you said we aren't paying age anymore. Had Ware been productive we would have paid age yet again like we have done numerous times before. That was Geng's point, and he's right.

Holy shit...this is fucking retarded. Umm yeah, you look for starters in FA...they are not just place holders. Teams like NE and Den sure seem to be adding some starters this offseason, but hey, you got this figured out.

I'd be willing to bet if we had signed legit FA starters you'd be singing a different tune.

Maybe hstour is the one putting together our plan.
 
We could very easily sign Melton to a modest deal, 5 years, 25 million, 10 million signing bonus, 2 million guaranteed first year base salary, 4 million first year cap hit. Increase the base salaries as the deal progresses, Romo's albatross deal won't be around much past the 2016 season so cap space won't be an issue late in the deal anyway.

Correct. While it may be nice to say "I'd draft for BPA no matter what holes I have," we all know damn well that if we have a dire need along the DL, our front office will take inferior DL players over superior OL players, just based on need alone.

Signing a couple starting caliber players (though non-break-the-bank guys) would be prudent if for no other reason than to relieve the front office of the pressure to draft on need.

I agree, free agency isn't for breaking the bank. But you'd like it to fill your needs.

So far we haven't done that -- though admittedly, because our bank was so badly broken, we can't do much better than this.
 
If FA is for bridge players (also called stop gaps/rotational players/backups) and the draft is for special teams, when do we work on our starters?

But it is far better than the Jerry grab the bright shiny object on that we have lived through for multiple years.

Of course I agree that having a process would be great. But I don't trust that there is a competent one at this point.

They signed the only two DL they could afford and got good value in each case.

They almost have to get Melton, and if they do they will have three injured players they are counting on in Melton, Crawford, and Lee.

This team's management is shit terrible. Looking at this roster, how in God's name can they be up against the cap? The two most talented players, Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant, are still on their rookie deals. Where the fuck did all the money go?
