2014 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Recap - Defensive Linemen

• Jadeveon Clowney has been viewed as the top prospect for the 2014 NFL Draft. Clowney checked in at 6-foot-5, 266 pounds with arms of 34.5 inches. Clowney is an inch shorter than listed and about five pounds lighter. He also had an 83-inch wing span and 10-inch hands. All of those measurements are good numbers, and none of them should hurt Clowney and he looks like he's dropped a few pounds to perform better at the Combine.
• One of the surprising weigh-ins came from Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt. At 6-foot-5, 304 pounds, Tuitt was back to his 2012 body type when he had a double-digit sack season. After offseason hernia surgery, Tuitt got heavy and played his final season around 320 pounds. Tuitt was looking like he would have to move inside to defensive tackle, but if he can maintain his weight around 300, he could stay at defensive end.
• Auburn defensive end/outside linebacker Dee Ford (6-2, 252) has added nine pounds since the weigh-in at the Senior Bowl. It will be interesting to see if the added weight slows down Ford in the 40 and the field work, where he's expected to excel. Ford can't survive at NFL at the defensive end in the 240s, so adding the weight could help Ford to appeal to 4-3 teams as a hybrid linebacker and end.
• Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton (6-0) was overweight and heavy at 315 pounds at the Senior Bowl. Since then, he's been working to drop the weight, and he showed huge progress to lose 12 pounds in a month. That should help Sutton to perform better in the field drills and illustrate the explosive play-making ability that allowed him to dominate the Pac-12 in 2012.
• Missouri defensive end Kony Ealy (6-4, 273) hit his weight, but was an inch shorter. For the NFL, Ealy looks like he would fit best as a 4-3 base end. In a 3-4 defense, he should add some weight to stay at defensive end or drop weight to play outside linebacker.
• South Florida defensive end Aaron Lynch (6-5, 249) continues to show that he made a mistake by entering the draft. His body is clearly underdeveloped for the NFL. Lynch is very lean, and while that might help him run a fast 40, he isn't big enough to play defensive end in a 4-3. He'll need at least a year of developing his body, and that makes Lynch look like a day-three pick.
• Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix is in the running to be the first defensive tackle selected. Nix (6-2, 331) checked in about an inch shorter and 10 pounds heavier than expected. Those are good numbers for Nix to show that he can drop weight in training and improve his conditioning. It also should help Nix to perform in the field work.
• A tackle who could go ahead of Nix depending on the team scheme is Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. Jernigan (6-2, 299) was solid at the weigh-in, and it was good that he was on the verge of 300 pounds. He met expectations.
• Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton (6-3, 273) didn't prove to be undersized as some feared. Crichton hit his listed height and was about five pounds heavier. Those are solid numbers to help Crichton appeal to both 4-3 and 3-4 teams.
• Boise State outside linebacker/defensive end Demarcus Lawrence met his height at 6-foot-3 and was about five pounds heavier at 251 pounds. Still, Lawrence is too light to play defensive end in the NFL and will have to move to linebacker. Lawrence should have stayed in college.
• LSU defensive tackles Ego Ferguson (6-3, 315) and Anthony Johnson (6-2, 308) were both slightly heavier than expected. Both have speed and explosion so they should do well at the Combine.
• Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat (6-3, 247) checked in an inch or two shorter than expected. He met the weight, but Jeffcoat will have to move to outside linebacker in the NFL. Sources have told WalterFootball.com that Jeffcoat is a third-day pick because he doesn't have strength for the line and lacks the athleticism for linebacker.

Greg Ellis worries about Michael Sam patting someone on the butt

We have a new leader in the contest to see who can say the most ridiculous thing about Michael Sam, the former Missouri defensive end who is poised to become the NFL’s first openly gay player.
That leader is Greg Ellis, the former Cowboys defensive end who said on ESPN Radio in Dallas that he’s worried about the consequences of Sam patting a teammate on the butt.
“If he pats somebody on the butt — I hope ESPN don’t get mad and never have me back — but if he pats somebody on the butt, how is that to be received? If he does that how is that to be received? If he said, ‘Come on baby’? I called guys baby all the time on the football field, but when you have taken a stand and went and go public and say that, ‘I am gay,’ how is that going to be received? I’ve seen guys, I had guys on the Dallas Cowboys football team — I won’t mention names — who did not want you to pat them on their butt. So God forbid if you pat one of those guys on the butt it’s going to be a major problem,” Ellis said, via the Dallas Morning News.
Some people find it strange that football players pat each other on the butt, and if some players don’t want to be patted on the butt, they’re free to speak up and say so. But the butt slap has so long been a part of the football culture that NFL Films once devoted a five-minute video to the topic. This may come as a shock to Ellis, but there have already been plenty of gay football players slapping teammates on the butt through the years, and it’s never been a problem. Those were closeted gay players; Sam may become the first openly gay NFL player to slap a teammate on the butt, and it won’t be a problem if Sam slaps a teammate on the butt, either.
If Ellis really believes that Sam slapping a teammate on the butt presents a “major problem,” then Ellis needs to grow up.

I think he can a solid #3 in the league, and keep in mind that I'm usually down on Texas players despite being a Longhorns fan.
However, this is not they type of player we need.
Goodwin was a pet cat of mine last year and he made some plays for the Bills last with that 4.2 speed of his.

I have more of an issue with the fact that a middling WR who was never a threat to be a top choice got a hatchet job about his attitude from Nawrocki.
That tells me it is more likely to be true than draft diversion.

He is intense competitor with above average athleticism.
He's huge. Not a lot of kids are 6'6" 265 and run a 4.7. He's basically Gronk. Pretty much same stats.
He's a little stiff in the hips. He runs a little upright and is fearless which scares me. I'm afraid he's gonna get hurt.
They just chunked it to him no mater the situation. He was a matchup nightmare split out. He can block. Loves the contact. Players in tight about 15% of the time, played split most of the time and even played wide some.
I would say he's better than our 2nd rounder that we took last year. I think a really good 2-3rd value.
He wil need some time to nature.
