Pick 23: Malachi Lawrence EDGE

Sweat would be a good complimentary starter but they would still need an ace edge pass rusher.

Some good all-22 of the counters Lawrence has in his arsenal, pretty advanced stuff and it's why I said he might be the best pure speed rusher in the class after Bailey:

He has an advanced tool set.

I was very high on him until I watched the ASU kid own him. But he is no slouch himself.

Looks like they played Nov 9, 2024.

I didn't realize Lawrence had 7.5 sacks in 2023.

Just watched it and I didn't really see many pure 1-on-1 pass pro reps between Lawrence/Iheanchor, most of the pass plays were RPO's and shit like that. There were maybe 10-15 of them, and overall I'd say it was mostly neutral, Lawrence got a few muddy wins but they weren't clean right off the snap, and then Iheanchor stonewalled him a few times.

Lawrence got beat up a bit in the run game but that's expected because he just isn't very good vs. the run, especially not when left 1-on-1 with OT's, and that's why I've been saying to me he's a 3-4 OLB only.

More importantly, I watched their 2025 game vs. BYU since one of the knocks on him was that most of his production came against poor teams (Baylor, WVU, etc.), and thought he was very impressive rushing the passer. In particular he had a picture perfect edge rush that didn't count as anything in the box score, but it was more valuable of a rep in my mind when evaluating edge rushers than about half of the actual sacks you see guys in college getting.

The 2:10 mark of the first quarter:

Good stuff. Yeah, that's the kind of rush he needs in the pros. Not all the long-developing stutter stuff that's too slow for the NFL. Just fire off and a quick dip of the shoulder with good hands. That plus a counter inside and some kind of a bull rush and drill those over and over until perfected.

I think we have to be patient with him because he needs a lot of coaching, but the end product should be worth it. Our best chance to do something is probably next year anyway.

The good news is that he seems like a serious guy who works hard and cares about football. Given that, I think he'll develop pretty nicely.

Hopefully Ware gets in his ear too.

Definitely. The pass rush consultant guy we hired will have fun, because he has a lot to work with.
