2026 Draft Week Chatter Thread...

So for anyone questioning Lawrence at 23 who would you have taken instead? Faulk? Hood? Chris Johnson? Thienemen?

We got the best pass rusher left in the draft in my opinion. Maybe a tossup with Howell but I get the upside is greater with Lawrence.

Thienemen might have been my BPA but no fucking way would I have gone back to back safeties with our prized free agent signing also being a safety.

I'm sure that we would have gotten props if we took Faulk. And I would have been sick to my stomach. It's not even close to me.

Stephen: Would've picked Lawrence at #20. There were a couple other players we could've drafted at #23 but getting the fourths was a big deal. Turned two compensatory fives into two fours.

Jerruh: It's a lot of fun having two 1st rounders.

Stephen: It'll be a challenge getting back into the second round. Philosophically, dont like giving up several players for one.

SOM: Can fill the run well, can blitz well, B gap, C gap. Downs made all the calls. Talking with his coaches, Downs didn't take time to make a difference; it was immediate.

Stephen: We didn't think Downs was going to be there. That's why we were okay giving up two fifths.

Jerruh: Someone trades up right in front of you and takes your player. So we bought a big time insurance policy to get Downs.

Q: How did it factor that Malachi stayed all four years at UCF in this day and age?
McClay: It was a part of it. Character. You ask about his reasoning for staying when offered more money to transfer elsewhere.

Jerruh: Asked Schotty earlier this week to make a list of who you're going to be sick to your stomach of players if we don't get him. Downs was one of the players on that list.

SOM: I didn't talk to Tyler Booker about Downs. After we drafted Downs, Booker texted me about his excitement.

Stephen: We don't plan on moving Pickens. We've got every reason in the world that Pickens is ready to get to work, but, to reiterate, no intention on moving Pickens

SOM: Multiple spots. Will play nickel. He's physical and athletic. Can play run, cover TEs, make the calls. Can do other things.

McClay: Christian Parker has a way of doing things to make you think like him. He kept sending me pictures of Caleb Downs and Malachi. In the morning, check my phone and first thing is pictures of them.

Jerruh: No agent will recognize the Texas tax advantage. I like to point out that's just not thinking. Compare TX vs NY state. Different from NIL, they aren't going to be paying state taxes.

Jerruh: It is a big thing for us. We looked for convenience. Corner-nickel or safety-nickel. We got a QB of the defense-nickel. Position-value-wise that's right up there with pressure player

SOM: Nickel will make lots of the calls, not green dot which will be LBer.

Jerruh: Couldn't imagine impact that Darren Woodson had on the team. Woody had such a leadership role on the team. Look at what he is after football - that's impressive. But same logic, rationale, judgement. Leader by example, outworked everyone. If we get Darren Woodson out of Caleb Downs...we've taken our lumps for making the trades to get us to this position, but getting Downs with it, I'm real good with it. Extra picks.

Jerruh: We were really working trades from the get go, but I wouldn't have, well, we didn't. We just gave up two fifths and that shows you in so many ways...very conscious decision to trade the two fifths.

Stephen: We did have conversations to move Top 10 but...
Jerruh: It's fair to say that only Downs and one more player would've been worth it.
Stephen: And he went Top 5.
Jerruh: We were two picks out, I wasn't thinking 12% odds or anything (referring to stat that Downs would be available at #12). We have to assume that Downs talked to other teams and teams liked Downs, too.

Give me the toolsy edge with elite athleticism over a white DB any day.

Bet it was Reese.

After Downs drafted, apparently Christian Parker said to SOM/Jerruh, okay I'm comfortable enough and will buy a house here now.

To me extrapolating a bit, sounds like Christian Parker during interviews said I ain't coming unless you commit to drafting defense.

Another comment by DC.com Youmans was if there was a tie, Christian Parker was the tiebreaker.
