Defensive Coordinator Candidates

So really, how good can our defense be next year? These defenses are so much better than us, it's discouraging.

I don't know if we can be any good next year even if we do everything right, and we know that won't happen anyway.

We don't need an elite defense to make a deep run.

Plus, most of these defenses don't have elite talent, which tells you how much a difference coaching can make. New England, Chicago and especially SF do not have significantly better talent than we do right now, we just had the unfortunate reality of having a complete limp dick DC who might never coach in the NFL again.

We don't need a Denver, Seattle or Houston level defense because our offense should be much better than theirs. We just need a competent defense.

Look at Buffalo, their defense isn't as good as Denver but almost (should have) beat them anyway.

I think Gannon might just be more of the same. I don't see much to like and obviously the Eberflus connection is a bit of a problem.

He was only under Eberflus for like 2-3 years I think, he wasn't a guy who followed Eberflus around for a decade like Borgonzi.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a zone-heavy scheme, in fact that's what the majority of the top defenses in the league right now are playing in terms of Houston, Seattle and Philly, I think Denver also. The issue with Eberflus is that his scheme got completely stagnant, he refused to adjust, and he seemed to be an arrogant fuck about it who was extremely unlikeable on top of it all.

You'd assume that could be smoked out through multiple interviews with a guy like Gannon, but who knows.

I don't think it's a risk at all with Leonhard or Parker though, which is why I'd prefer them at this point.

No, but we were so incredibly awful even just "pretty good" seems like it's going to be very hard to get to. At least in just one year.

I do have to remind myself that our players looked worse than they were because I suspect they never liked or trusted Eberflus. But still.

If we hire Gannon I'll just close my eyes and cross my fingers. But I'll say if that's our pick, you'd think it would be a done deal already. I mean why wait? You'd think at least maybe there is a guy still in the playoffs we are interested in. Or we are waiting for something else to happen. Like we could have been waiting to see what happens with Ulbrich.

I still think Leonhard is the leader in the clubhouse but I guess we also need a backup option.
 
Gannon would be a very uninspiring hire. He’s never done shit, really.

Gannon is an uninspiring bag of whatever,
 
So I think the overall situation is pretty cut and dry given a number of factors:

-All of the guys we're bringing in for 2nd interviews are available to be hired right now (Parker, Gannon and Jones).
-Leonhard isn't available for an in-person interview until the Monday after the AFCC and presumably can't be officially hired until Denver is out, which I assume will also be the Monday after the AFCC given Nix being out.
-HC spots (and the associated staffs) will probably start filling up next week now that dominoes are starting to fall, that means additional teams will be looking to hire DC's, including teams that lose DC's to HC spots like potentially SF and Green Bay.

With all that in mind, if someone isn't hired by about the middle of next week, and definitely by next weekend, you have to assume the Leonhard smoke is real. That's doubly true if teams like the Giants and Jets who are rumored to be interested in Leonhard make DC hires.

If you're in love with a Parker or Gannon or whoever out of those three 2nd interview guys it makes no sense to wait since the longer you wait, the more spots open up. If they're holding off on a hire it's for a reason.

I assume Flores and Schwartz are completely off the table and will be either getting HC jobs or going back to their respective teams. For whatever reason they don't seem interested in Morris at all.
