2014, because you had the very best version of Romo and a defense that was better at getting turnovers. Both had similarly great OLs and elite running games. Plus if Dallas had made it past GB, they would have faced a Seattle team that they had already shown they could beat earlier that year.

Great point. I'd also say 2016 Zeke was underutilized in the passing game.
Take out the long TD off a screen against the Steelers and he was hardly used.
Murray made for an effective safety net for Romo as a receiver in 2014. Underrated.

Yep. That was a really good team when Romo's back was healthy.

Really only missing some speed at WR and of course NT and overall depth on defense.

It's amazing the defense played as well as it did vs Green Bay in the playoffs given the weekly attrition.

2014 because they actually had the mental toughness to do it.

We outplayed the Packers that divisional game and just gave so many chances away.

The 2016 team, while good, was still led by a limited rookie QB and wasn't anywhere near ready to play in that Packers game.

We recovered to give ourselves a chance, but the 2014 team never gets in that hole.

Agreed.

He was so fucking dominant and he had that dawg mentality.

He was the perfect runner for that line.

Murray was arguably the hardest RB to tackle in football at that time but he had enough quickness and speed to break long runs as well.

If it wasn't for the damn fumbling that year, it would have been a perfect season for a RB.

That defense was not very talented but they had heart.

And what I specifically remember about that season in regards to the defense was how clutch they were at getting the last stop in so many games and how different that had been from the previous 15-plus years.

For most of the 2000s the Cowboys would always find new ways to lose and the defenses would have these great 58 min performances just to fold every time when it mattered most.

In 2014, that was the exception to the rule.

And that's why I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that the Packers score even if the Dez catch would have stood because that defense came through every single time that season when holding onto a lead and getting a stop to seal the deal.

2014 is the ONE season that truly hurt to see end from 2010 onward.

Exactly... Having the best Romo ever is a huge deal.

Not only did he play his best as a passer, he was no longer that guy that you feared would shit the bed at the wrong time.

Best Romo and best Dez was something to watch.

You're 100% right about that defense being clutch. Every aspect of that team was tough, clutch. They could take a hit, get back up and knock you out.
As far as recent Cowboys teams that were legitimate SB contenders, I'd have 2014 and 2007 as the only teams that really could have made it to the SB. To be honest, I think both would have likely lost to those Patriots teams, but still.

That was golden. Still the most fun season I've ever had watching the Cowboys (I didn't see the dynasty).
