I've always thought public beatings would probably send a stronger message of deterrence than jail time or fines.

The visual of someone getting whipped with a bamboo cane would make a lot of people reconsider committing a criminal act.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos yesterday about the caning, corporal punishment system in Singapore.

The system and methodology are a lot more detailed than I imagined.

Even the guy delivering the punishment has to go through extensive training before he's allowed to flog someone.

I've been to Singapore 5-6 times during my time in the Navy. The threat of caning was very real, even for something as innocuous as supposedly leering at a female, chewing gum, or public intoxication was pounded into us before every port visit.

Of course, some dumbass Sailor would always get hemmed up for doing something stupid while drunk and run from or fight a cop, and only the strong relationships between the Navy and Singapore officials would save his/her from public humiliation.
