Why do so many NFL players get hurt doing the most mundane of exercises? I am genuinely curious.

Report: Dan Koppen tore his ACL

Posted by Josh Alper on July 28, 2013, 4:16 PM EDT

The Broncos may be in the market for some offensive line help.

As reported earlier, center Dan Koppen had to be carted off the field with an injury to his leg during Sunday’s practice. Koppen was taken for an MRI right after getting hurt and Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post reports that Koppen tore his ACL.

It’s a big blow for the Broncos, who re-signed with the team in June after center J.D. Walton had surgery on the ankle he broke in 2012. Koppen stepped in for Walton last year, making 12 starts, and was expected to do so again this year, but it would appear that we won’t be seeing him on the field until next season.

Manny Ramirez took over for Koppen on Sunday and he’s the only experienced option currently on the roster. Phillip Blake, a fourth-round choice in 2012, also plays center, but he missed almost all of his rookie season with a thumb injury. Complicating matters on the interior for the Broncos is the ongoing ankle and leg trouble that guard Chris Kuper has been experiencing since breaking his leg late in the 2011 season.

With protecting Peyton Manning as important as ever in Denver, the Broncos will likely be scouring the market for bodies to help them get through camp and beyond without further losses on the line.

Offer them Phil Costa.

Report: Dolphins WR Armon Binns suffers ACL, MCL tears

Posted by Mike Wilkening on July 28, 2013, 7:57 PM EDT

Dolphins wide receiver Armon Binns tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee on Sunday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported this evening.

The injuries will end Binns’ season, Jackson said.

The 23-year-old Binns appeared in three games for Miami in 2012 after being claimed off waivers from Cincinnati. Binns began 2012 as a regular for the Bengals, catching 18 passes for 210 yards and a score in eight games (five starts) for Cincinnati.

Binns was to vie for one of the Dolphins’ WR depth chart spots beyond Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson. Second-year pro Rishard Matthews, another contender for a backup role, could miss multiple weeks with a not-yet-known injury, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reported Sunday.

Jeff Fuller and Marvin McNutt are other wideouts competing for roster spots in Miami.

Is it just me, or is there an inordinate amount of ACL/MCL tears this year?

I think the first quarter of the season a year ago was by far the worst I've ever seen.

Eagles have another torn ACL in camp

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 29, 2013, 5:45 PM EDT

The Eagles have lost their second player for the season, in the first week of training camp.

According to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, the Eagles confirmed that linebacker Jason Phillips suffered a torn right ACL.

Phillips, signed from Carolina this offseason as a free agent, was carted off during this morning’s practice.

He joins wide receiver Jeremy Maclin on the out-for-the-year list, making the Eagles the unluckiest team in the league so far.

Percy Harvin tweeted Tuesday evening that his hip injury will require surgery.

Harvin hinted the operation will be season-ending, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports he could return in 3-4 months. PFT reports he'll be back "late in the season." At the very least, Harvin is staring at a six-game stay on the PUP list. An official timeline should emerge in short order. It's obviously a devastating blow for the Seahawks, who were counting on Harvin to add a new dimension to their well-oiled read option attack. As it is, Golden Tate will revert to being Seattle's primary playmaker at receiver, while the onus will be on Sidney Rice (knee) to stay healthy. Between his signing bonus and salary, Harvin is bringing home $14.5 million this season after the Seahawks surrendered three draft picks — including their 2013 first-rounder — for his services. Where Harvin's "injury prone" label was once unwarranted, that is no longer the case.

Harvin will have surgery Thursday, return late in the season

Posted by Mike Florio on July 30, 2013, 8:22 PM EDT

Now that Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin has decided to have surgery to repair the slight tear in the labrum in his hip, he’s wasting no time to get it fixed.

Per a league source, Harvin will have surgery on Thursday in New York.

While one of Harvin’s tweets could be read to imply he won’t play at all in 2013, we’re told that Harvin is expected back late in the season.

Since Harvin is on the physically unable to perform list, the Seahawks likely will shift him to the reserve/PUP list before the start of the regular season. He’ll then have to be activated for practice purposes between Week Six and Week Nine. Once he begins to practice, the Seahawks will have three weeks to shift him to the active roster or shut him down for the season.

And so the arms race in the NFC West has seen the two best teams lose their top receivers for a large chunk of the coming season, opening the door for the Rams and Cardinals to close the gap a bit.

Think the Seahawks are having some buyers remorse? (and I'm not just talking about the upcoming surgery)

49ers CB Chris Culliver tore his left ACL in Thursday's training camp practice and is done for the season.

A gunner on the punt team, Culliver got mixed up with rookie CB Marcus Cooper and tore his ACL. The soon-to-be 25-year-old was overmatched in Super Bowl 47, but earned a positive season grade from Pro Football Focus. Culliver was penciled in as the Niners' No. 3 corner. Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock, and Perrish Cox will now vie for that role. Culliver's loss is a huge blow to a San Francisco team already needy at cornerback. The 49ers tried trading for Eric Wright in July, but Wright failed his physical and was released.

Harbinger is a nice player, but I never understood why someone would give him so much money as if he were a dominant receiver.

Add the fact that he has quite the injury history, and you have the makings of a bad situation waiting to happen - and it did.

Report: Packers fear season-ending knee injury for Bulaga

Posted by Mike Florio on August 4, 2013, 11:01 PM EDT

In recent years, the left tackle position hasn’t been boring for the Packers. Suddenly, it’s getting a lot more interesting.

Despite an offensive line featuring plenty of players with college experience at left tackle, the Packers can’t seem to find a perennial solution at the position. And this year’s first option could be gone before even before the first preseason game.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Bryan Bulaga suffered a knee injury during Saturday night’s scrimmage. Bulaga, who was walking after the intra-squad practice, reported a problem with the knee. On Sunday, the medical staff ran tests on the joint.

Per McGinn, the team is concerned that Bulaga has a season-ending ligament tear.

Bulaga reportedly sustained a “nasty fall” on the first series, but didn’t miss any of his 30 snaps during the scrimmage.

Previously a right tackle, the Packers moved Bulaga to the left side during the offseason, shifting Marshall Newhouse to the right side.
