Firing a handgun accurately isn't as easy as people think. There is a lot of hand/arm movement that changes that short little barrel's aim. It only takes a half inch movement to create a 12 inch change in trajectory of the round. Add in the adrenaline of being charged by someone with a knife, and that half inch movement turns into a two inch movement.
