IRVING — Dallas Cowboys leading tackler Rolando McClain isn’t with the club Wednesday and Thursday to attend to a family situation, coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday morning.
McClain, the Cowboys’ starting middle linebacker who has helped bring life to a defense that finished last in the league in 2013, is expected to return to the team Friday, Garrett said. McClain wasn’t likely to practice much until Friday anyway — as he did last week — because he’s been recovering from a strained groin.
This will be the third time over the last four weeks that McClain has not practiced on Wednesday and Thursday leading up to a game.
The Cowboys have known about McClain’s situation for weeks, so club officials weren’t surprised by McClain’s need to leave the team for a few days.
McClain, the former Crimson Tide standout, has left the team to return to Alabama because of custody hearings involving his two sons.
Over the last year, McClain was involved in two active custody suits in Alabama. McClain has a son with Capri Knox, whom he married in April 2013 but divorced five months later. Knox is a former track and field athlete at Alabama.
McClain has a younger son with Lindsey Leigh Hawkins, an Alabama graduate from his hometown of Decatur, Ala. McClain was sued in February 2013 by Hawkins for custody of their son.
