Archer - Pondering the 46: Room for Spurlock?

Archer - Pondering the 46: Room for Spurlock?

Pondering the 46: Room for Spurlock?

December, 21, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Sometimes when Pondering the 46, you have to figure out how to get a player to the game and not how to come up with seven inactive players.

That’s the case with receiver/returner Michael Spurlock this week against the Washington Redskins.

The Cowboys would not have signed him this week if they were pleased with their return game in Dwayne Harris' absence. Even if Terrance Williams didn’t have a strained hamstring, Spurlock would be here.

But how does he make it to the 46?

We know Dwayne Harris, Sean Lee and Morris Claiborne are out with injuries, even though Claiborne is officially listed as doubtful. Ernie Sims is likely to be out, too, but he is doubtful with a groin injury. We know Darrion Weems and Jakar Hamilton will be inactive.

Williams is listed as questionable. If he can’t play, then Spurlock gets that spot. If he can play, then the Cowboys will have to figure out where they go light.

It can’t be at linebacker. They have only five healthy linebackers. It can’t be on the offensive line. They have to take seven to the game. It can’t be quarterback, tight end, secondary or the specialists either.

We’re down to running back and defensive line. Phillip Tanner has special teams value, and if they need to run out the clock late I would think they would go with him if something happened to DeMarco Murray.

So now we’re down to the defensive line. Two weeks ago Everette Brown did not dress. Last week it was Martez Wilson. Jarius Wynn is questionable with a chest injury. They need to get after Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, so pass rush will be at a premium. I think they will carry all of their ends. That leaves newcomer Frank Kearse. Signed on Wednesday off the Tennessee Titans practice squad, he brings some size to the line, but that might not be enough to get him on the 46.

The inactives: Lee, Harris, Claiborne, Hamilton, Weems, Sims, Kearse.

Jerry Jones expects high-scoring game Sunday

JON MACHOTA |

Published: Friday, December 20, 2013, 4:12pm

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday morning that he anticipates a high-scoring game Sunday in Washington. In Jones' words, "We better plan on some points going up."

The Cowboys defeated Washington 31-16 at AT&T Stadium in Week 6. But over the last three weeks, Dallas is scoring 31.6 points and giving up 35.3 points per game.

Although Washington is 3-11 and out of the playoff picture, the Redskins have an opportunity to ruin the Cowboys' year. Dallas can win the NFC East with victories the next two weeks but it can be knocked out of the playoff picture with a loss Sunday and a Philadelphia win over Chicago later that night.

Because of those scenarios, Jones says the Cowboys have more to lose than the Redskins.

"Well, I think we do because we really diminish our chances of getting into the playoffs," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "I would have to say when you start a season, that's what you play for, those are your goals, and the more important thing is that's where all the upside is this year.

"All I want to do is somehow, and I don't care what it looks like, how pretty it is, I just want to come out of there ahead and winning the game. That gives us another chance here with Philadelphia at home to get where we want to be. We can be in as good of shape for one game as anybody if we can get in the playoff."

Dallas Cowboys could be playing in the rain on Sunday

IRVING — Bill Callahan professed his love for running the football on Thursday.

This Sunday, the Cowboys offensive coordinator’s devotion is expected to be put to the test. After all, there is a 60 percent chance it will rain Sunday in Landover, Md., where Dallas plays Washington. There could even be some thunderstorms on a day when the high temperature could be in the lower 70s.

Because of the potential wet weather, the Cowboys could rely more on tailback DeMarco Murray than quarterback Tony Romo.

“We love the running game and we’ll continue to feature it and improve it,” Callahan said. “I have a lot of confidence in our running game. I certainly do. I have a lot of confidence in it, the guys have done a great job.”

Dallas is producing six yards per carry and 134.4 yards per game on the ground in its last five contests. But they have only averaged 22.4 rush attempts during that period. On Sunday, in potentially sloppy conditions, it’s possible Romo will be handing the ball off a lot more than he’s throwing it.

Matchup to watch: Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware vs. Washington Redskins LT Trent Williams
By Rainer Sabin

DeMarcus Ware insists he’s the same player he’s always been, that he’s giving 100 percent effort. But he hasn’t delivered the type of production expected of him. The seven-time Pro Bowler has collected only six sacks and has been unable to prop up a patchwork defensive line littered with no-name players.

Last Sunday, Ware went virtually unnoticed during the Cowboys’ 37-36 loss to Green Bay. He made an assisted tackle and hit the quarterback once. This week, he said he needs to “redeem” himself.

Ware will face off against Redskins left tackle Trent Williams, who will protect Kirk Cousins’ blindside. This year Williams has been inconsistent. He has surrendered 9 ½ sacks, the highest number during a season since he was a rookie in 2010. He has also committed four penalties. But Williams has been dependable.

He has missed only two of the team’s 1,024 offensive snaps this season and has allowed the fewest quarterback hurries among the team’s starting linemen, according to ProFootballFocus.com. Now he faces Ware, a player who suddenly has something to prove.

Every player feels this way heading into their 30's. With the number of snaps Ware has taken, he's in even worse shape. I'd be stunned if Williams doesn't utterly pwn Ware.
