Mosley: The Cowboys are bluffing when it comes to their thoughts on drafting a QB at No. 4

By Matt Mosley , Special Contributor

The only thing standing in the way of Jerry Jones possibly taking a quarterback with the fourth overall pick in this April's draft is Tony Romo. And Jones made it clear at the NFL combine that he believed Romo had plenty of tread left on his delicate clavicle.

I believe now more than ever that Jones was full of it when he made those comments. The Cowboys haven't brought in a legitimate backup to Romo for one simple reason: They are thinking seriously about selecting either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff.

I believe this based on the indifference they've shown to the backup spot in free agency and the whispers coming from Valley Ranch. A report surfaced this weekend that former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott will be in town to meet with the Cowboys on Sunday. The organization loves the fact that Prescott captained his team four of the five years he was on campus. The fact that he was arrested on DUI charges recently may cause him to fall in the draft, but this is the land of second (and third) chances. Former Eagles personnel man and current ESPN analyst Louis Riddick told 103.3 FM ESPN's "Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw & Mosley" there's almost no way you can watch film of Prescott in college and project him as a starter in the NFL. The Cowboys love his intangibles and I've had one AFC scout tell me that Prescott's quick release reminds him of Aaron Rodgers'. There's a chance now the Cowboys could have Prescott in the third or fourth rounds of the draft.

A lot of experts have the Cowboys taking Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa at No. 4, but I'm told the Cowboys are more enamored with Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey at this point in the process.

Jared Goff, the man with the smallish hands, impressed scouts with his arm strength and accuracy at his pro day last week. The Cleveland Browns (picking second overall) doused a football in water just to see how it would impact Goff's throws. By all accounts, it had zero impact. I believe the Cowboys are devoting a lot of time to studying both Goff and Wentz at this point. It would help their cause if the Browns traded for Colin Kaepernick, but nothing has happened on that front. The Cowboys have a better feel for Wentz because they coached him at the Senior Bowl. It's believed that head coach Jason Garrett prefers Wentz to Goff after spending so much time with him, but I wouldn't rule out Goff to the Cowboys if Wentz goes to the Browns. I've found that scouts across the league seem to lean more to Wentz, while a lot of coaches prefer Goff. That probably has a lot to do with Goff having faced stiffer competition in college.

The one thing I don't see happening is the Cowboys trading up to land one of the quarterbacks. Right now, I'm hearing they like three or four position players more than Wentz. If the draft happened today, I think Jones would pull the trigger on one of the quarterbacks. But a lot can change over the next month.

For now, I think it will be between the two quarterbacks and Ramsey at No. 4. And if Jerry tries to argue to the contrary, I may believe him even less...if that's possible.

Now, get back to your brackets.

I hope he is right, but I am still expecting a DB at 4.

If Ramsey makes it to four, he's the pick. Especially now he has Dez Bryant's endorsement.

I want to homer out and towel wave, but this team has let me down way too often.

I will say, I agree that there are signs that they are bluffing, as I've said before.

This has been my opinion as well. But it also just seems like too much of a convenient excuse for a fan who wants to hold out hope for us taking a QB. Which is why I hesitate to say so. But the thing about Jerry saying there is no way we will take a QB at 4 is that we had previously said basically the opposite through Stephen Jones.

If Jerry is going to pull out the ultimate bluff now is the time to do so. You have the Browns at 2 taking a QB. Then the Chargers at 3 who would be a prime spot to jump ahead of Dallas. If you're the 49ers for example wanting to secure a top 2 QB in this draft the Chargers spot is where you go if you think the Cowboys are legitimately wanting a QB. Or really for any of the other NFL teams wanting a franchise QB. On the other hand if you think there is zero chance the Cowboys take a QB then if you're the 49ers you kind of sit back knowing the Jags and Ravens won't be taking one. So like I said, if you're going to bluff as Jerry Jones, this is the year to do it!

What can he do to bluff? All I can think of is to sit tight and do nothing until #3 is in progress then engage your policy plan.

By telling a media member that their is no way the Cowboys would take a QB at 4. Additionally you could potentially not bring in the top 2 QBs for predraft visits (No idea if they are or not). You could not set up a private interview with Wentz at the combine (Not like we needed to after spending a week with the guy).

All those things have essentially been done. To me he just sits tight and sees how the first two picks go. That will likely trigger any strategy that needs to be done. If it is as they are looking for after #2 then you pull the trigger at number 4 as you planned.

It really doesn't matter who they take at 4 since we're stuck with Ginger and The Process indefinitely. This team isn't put together very well and the coaching staff sucks. It won't change until Jerry is completely out of the picture. A lot of folks say Stephen is calling the shots now. I call BS to that. Jerry is still very much involved. Too involved! It won't get better till he passes on. Hopefully Stephen will have the smarts to know he needs a football man at GM and HC.
Here's hoping..🙏

Even though I'd prefer Goff or Wentz I'm hoping we take Elliot so he can call out garrett for abandoning the run like he did at OSU

and welcome to the board Jafah :buddy

Not sure when or how Elliott became a reasonable pick at 4. I'd be livid if we take him there.
Why? He'd have the biggest impact in the draft, behind this line he would do wonders, and hopefully keep Romo off his ass, id rather go QB or Ramsey for the long haul. But for the next 3 years Elliott would be the best back in the league running behind this line

That's far from a sure thing. Because he isn't anywhere close to the fourth best player in this draft. And I'm sick and tired of people talking about 3 or 4 years. You draft a guy at four to be a FRANCHISE player. A franchise player isn't some flash in the pan 3 or 4 year player. You want to know why so few backs go in the first round these days? It's because you can't survive with top draft picks only lasting 4 years on your team. If that's your timeline for a draft pick you'd have to hit on 5 starters in every damn draft just to field a team. Good luck with that. It's why other position are worth more. Because if the players you hit on play for you for 10 years, you can build a team through the draft.

I don't think he is in the same class as a healthy Todd Gurley. Not even close really

That's true, but we will have romo for 5 years if we're lucky, we have been rebuilding for 20 years.. I'm trying to win now!!

I will bet you any amount of money we won't. That dude is another broken collarbone from retiring. I'd be surprised if we get him for 14 games even next season.

You're probably right, but there's a chance he could stay healthy, Elliott would be his best bet, id rather go qb for the future.. Those quincy Carter days were horrible.. But if jerry isn't blowing smoke about qb.. Elliott would really help our chances, he does everything well, he's a complete back and gurley isn't that much better than him.
