What are the Mets thinking here?
I don't think they've come out and announced it, but my expectation is that Stearns, coming from his small-ball payroll background, is expecting Carson Benge and Jett Williams to be up with the big club soon. Their payroll was massive last year and even if Cohen can afford it I don't think Stearns is comfortable keeping it that high, or at least, not comfortable going much higher. I think they still would like to sign Pete and Diaz. Some salary has to be shed. If you've got high-ranking prospects coming up, it makes it easier to unload non-essential salary elsewhere, and that's kind of Nimmo. You obviously are building around Soto in the outfield. Siemen I think actually makes more money? But his contract is way shorter, so I think that's how they see it. They've moved out a long term commitment at a position where they have a bunch of youth rising, in exchange for a much shorter commitment at an area they wanted to improve.
Stearns apparently talked a lot about how the team has to get better defensively. I'm not sure that's the right approach, I think "defense," is overrated, it's all kind of the same, hitting is where you will find bigger dividends between winning and losing. But Siemen is a better defensive player.
That leads to the question of what are they doing with Jeff McNeill? He might be on the move next, I'd think, since he plays infield, is older and more expensive, and they've got youth all over the infield as well. Ronny Mauricio and Brett Baty are in the running for infield spots too. Though I also wonder if one of them is getting flipped for pitching help. Or Vientos. They've got a lot of young options, who maybe aren't ready yet, but, are in the pipeline.
