So he only counts 2 million on the payroll for each of the 10 years ?

Seems like a loophole in the system.

Until you're the Mets and paying Bobby Bonilla until the year 2380.

Also, I can't imagine many players would go for this. It's really not a good idea unless I am missing something.

First, that's bullshit.

If you get to defer the payments till after the guy is not even playing baseball anymore, then can you really afford him?

And if you can't, then why are you allowed to sign him?

Baseball finances are stupid.

Agreed. It's a crock of shit.

They're paying him through 2043.

I don't see him endorsing any products in the States. Maybe he's really cashing in back home. His agent alone will earn $35M on this deal.

It's ridiculous.

I mean, if you're allowed to spread out the payments for like a hundred years then even the Oakland A's can afford him.

I hate the way the salary system works in baseball to begin with, but at least when the Yankees pay out the wazoo for a player, they're paying him a shit load of money every year which is how it should be.

This nonsense where you can sign a generational player but pay bargain basement prices for him while he's active is a total crock of shit.

I get it for the team, but why would he accept that deal? I don't get it.

Well if he is getting 50 a year in endorsements I guess he can go the Brady route.

Going to sting if they don't win, though.

I'd never go the Brady route in an uncapped league playing for one of the super rich franchises.

They did the same thing with Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman's contracts. It's just that they're not nearly as notable as Ohtani and obviously their contract numbers weren't as big, so no one gave shit. But both of those guys are going to be receiving a big chunk of their contract in deferred payments well in the 2040s.
