Over the weekend, there was a report out of Tampa that the Buccaneers and wide receiver Mike Williams were talking about a contract extension without making any tangible progress.

The last couple of days must have been particularly fruitful because Williams has landed his extension. The Buccaneers announced the deal on Wednesday morning. The Bucs announced it as a six-year deal running through 2018, but it extends Williams’ stay in Tampa for five years since he has a year left on his old deal.

The Bucs also made the unusual step of announcing the terms. It’s $40.25 million over six years for Williams, but we’ll have to wait on details involving guarantees and the like.

“We are pleased to have Mike signed to a long-term contract that ensures he will continue to be part of the exciting young core of players we are building around,” Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik said in a release. “Mike has earned this contract through his hard work and production the past three seasons and we are looking forward to seeing him continue that career development as a Buccaneer.”

Whatever the specifics, the key is that the Bucs have wrapped up a key offensive piece ahead of camp so that Williams can concentrate on football first and foremost all season. That’s good news for quarterback Josh Freeman as he makes the case for an extension that has him throwing passes to Williams well beyond the 2013 season.

Holy shit. That's a lot for a middle of the road, borderline number one guy.

It is amazing they give that kind of guaranteed money to a player who's never even had a 1000 yard season. He's getting paid DeSean Jackson/Victor Cruz kind of money.
