Cowboys scoring consistently on opening drives: 'It's some good stuff,' Garrett says

The Cowboys have scored on the opening drive in five of the six games this year, and four times on the opening drive of the second half.

“It’s some good stuff,” coach Jason Garrett said at his Wednesday press conference. “Just a combination of executing ball plays and really not making the mistakes that teams tend to make to start a ballgame.”

The Cowboys have committed only four penalties on their 12 drives to open the game or the second half. Tyron Smith had a false start in the red zone that forced the Cowboys to kick a field goal in Week 1 against the Giants. Ron Leary had a false start in a field-goal drive to start the second half at Kansas City. Brian Waters had a hold in a third-quarter opening drive against St. Louis, but the Cowboys reached the end zone. And Cole Beasley had a false start in the second-half opening drive at San Diego, but the Cowboys made up the first down. That drive ended with a sideline drop by Dez Bryant on third-and-11.

And Tony Romo has been sacked only three times in opening drives.

“It always comes down to executing, handling the emotion of the early part of a game, and then executing your running game, executing your passing game, and I think we’ve done that,” Garrett said. “I think we’ve done that fairly consistently throughout the game, but it’s certainly nice to get off to good starts and leading the ball game early on.”

The Cowboys have a 44-27 scoring edge in the first quarter but are being outscored 48-44 in the third quarter.
